Ik ben Xena Maria Evers en twee jaar geleden stuitte ik op het bijzondere verhaal van de Rotterdamse ambtenaar Isa Kriens. Isa stond op het punt om haar baan als jurist bij de gemeente op te zeggen om zich fulltime op haar activisme tegen het coronabeleid te storten. Ik zag een krachtige en kwetsbare vrouw die radicaal anders is gaan leven doordat ze ervan overtuigd is dat het systeem waarin we leven kapot is. Ik wist niet waar Isa’s reis toe zou leiden, of hoe lang ik haar zou volgen, maar ik legde de afgelopen twee jaar alles vast. Van het moment dat ze haar werkspullen inleverde bij haar overheidsbaan, tot demonstraties waar ze mensen oproept zelf na te denken, en de groeiende beweging die Isa tegen wil en dank verandert in een rolmodel voor haar 65.000 Instagramvolgers. Via lockdowns, breakdowns en break-ups naar een nieuw bestaan buiten de gevestigde orde en toch ook weer een beetje terug. Deze film vertelt het persoonlijke verhaal van Isa’s radicale omslag, maar is ook een uniek tijdsdocument van een historische periode in onze recente geschiedenis.

De afgelopen jaren werkte ik solo aan dit project. Ik heb inmiddels meer dan 200 uur tijd en energie gestoken in het vastleggen van Isa’s transformatie. Nu is het tijd voor teamwork! Met jouw hulp kan ik deze schat aan materiaal naar een hoger niveau tillen. Samen met een professioneel team bestaande uit een editor, een sound designer, een vormgever, een audionabewerker, een grader, een coach en een dramaturg wil ik de laatste stap zetten naar een documentaire van 50 minuten: De Kleine Activist.

Over mij

Als filmmaker en filosoof, maar ook als mens, word ik gedreven door mijn nieuwsgierigheid naar onderwerpen die ik niet helemaal begrijp of kan plaatsen. Juist onderbelichte verhalen interesseren me omdat ik sterk geloof in solidariteit en de overbruggende kracht van film. Door met mijn camera op een respectvolle manier dicht bij mensen te komen, hoop ik een inkijkje te geven in de wereld van de ander, om zo meer wederzijds begrip te kweken.

Ik maakte eerder de documentaire Mijn broer en ik (2018) over mijn relatie met mijn tot de islam bekeerde broer, portretteerde mensenrechtenactivisten voor Human Rights Tattoo, legde jonge talenten vast in hun voorbereiding voor de Olympische spelen voor VPRO’s De Beloften en regisseerde ik afleveringen voor Het Klokhuis.

I am Xena Maria Evers. Two years ago I came across the amazing story of Rotterdam’s civil servant, Isa Kriens. In order to be able to focus full-time on her activism against Corona policies in the Netherlands, Isa quit her job as a lawyer at the municipality. She was convinced that the system we live in, is coming to an end.. I saw a powerful and vulnerable woman who changed her life radically. I didn't know where Isa's journey would lead to, or how long I would be following her. However, I recorded everything for the past two years. From the moment she resignated from her government job, to demonstrations where she calls on people to think for themselves, and the growing movement that reluctantly turns Isa into a role model for her 65,000 Instagram followers. Through lockdowns, breakdowns, break-ups, to a new way of life outside the establishment, this unique documentary capture’s our post-Corona zeitgeist, while examining the personal story of Isa's radical turnaround.

Together with a professional team consisting of an editor, a sound designer, a designer, an audio editor, a grader, a coach, and a dramaturg, I want to take the final step towards a 50-minute documentary: The Little Activist.

About me

As a filmmaker and philosopher, but also as a private person, I am driven by my curiosity about subjects that I do not fully understand or can’t place in my frame of mind. Especially underexposed stories interest me because I strongly believe in solidarity and the bridging power of documentaries. By getting close to people with my camera in a respectful way, I hope to give an insight into the world of the other person, in order to foster more mutual understanding. Previously I made the documentary My brother and I (2018), portrayed human rights activists for Human Rights Tattoo, captured young talents in their preparation for the Olympics for VPRO's De Beloften and I directed episodes for Het Klokhuis.
