Doña Marina medical expenses
Donation protected
Hi everyone, my name is Suyen Espinoza, a Biology graduate student from Nicaragua living in Boston. My dad passed away when he was 52 years old, six years ago from larynx cancer and since then I became the financial support for my family. I have been able to do my graduate studies thanks to fellowships which have allowed me cover my living expenses and to send every month money back home to continue supporting my family. My mom, Marina Miranda is 53 years old and she is the strongest and greatest human being I know. A month ago, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The "c word" completely destroyed our family after the pain of losing my dad.
The diagnosis indicated that the first step of the treatment was to do a mastectomy and thanks to some friends and family, we were able to afford the expenses of the surgery.
But this week, we got the news that she needs over nine chemotherapy treatments, five years of pill-based hormone treatment, and targeted therapy for HER-2-positive breast cancer. Unfortunately, healthcare in Nicaragua is one of the worst healthcare systems in the world, and the only way to get good treatment is by using private health care. Each chemotherapy costs $1,200 and the first out of nine should be done as soon as possible. And the HER-2 targeted therapy is about $40,000 for all six cycles.
As you can imagine, I am still working towards getting my degree which means l am still a student living on a stipend.
Today, I am asking for your contribution to help me with my mom’s treatment expenses. With your help, I will be able to pay for some of my mom chemotherapy and HER-2 targeted therapy.
