Kevin’s vet bills

This is Kevin our 8 month old greyhound blue merle collie cross who was born genetically blind from over breeding. He had a rough start in life poorly cared for and taken to the vets to be euthanised at a young age as he was “useless to the breeder being blind”.

He was rescued by the vet and placed with a wonderful foster family, through the charity Dog Friends, until we adopted him in August 2023.

Kevin has been living his best life running around with confidence and growing into an amazing dog with our family and our 6 year old Collie Skye.

On Friday 22nd December Kevin was having the best adventure running around with his new dog cousins Rookie and Finlay in a secure dog field when he was doing Zoomies and collided at full greyhound pace with a metal bench (the only obstacle in this large field - what are the chances?) causing a severe break to his front leg.

The seriousness of his break was found a few hours later after lots of pain relief, sedation and anaesthetic and we were faced with the option of amputation of his front leg or an orthopaedic surgical repair with pins and plates. How can we agree to amputate the leg of this beautiful boy who is already challenged without vision.

We agreed to his surgery but a complication during the operation lead to a cardiac arrest and required some additional medication and a night in intensive care.

A week down the line and he is up using his leg with the smallest limp and like nothing ever happened. We as a family are now facing a vet bill of over £7000. He has insurance but is only covered up to £3000 so we have a shortfall of £4000 to find.

We would not change a thing but are asking anyone if they can spare £1 or £2 to help us to pay the cost of this horrific freak accident. He has had such a difficult start in life we are determined to give him the best life possible
