My name is Jessica Loya, and I am raising funds on behalf of a local DMV Guatemalan immigrant family (husband, wife, and 3 small children under the age of 10) who have been impacted by the Trump Administration's attack on our immigrant neighbors.
On August 22nd, I witnessed firsthand the racial profiling of my neighbor as he stepped out to grab some tools from his car. ICE was doing roving patrols in NW DC when they stopped to question him and ultimately detained him without a warrant or knowledge of his name or status. He is a loving father and beloved community member, who was detained for over three month. He faced mistreatment in ICE detention while being shipped around the country from VA, to OH, to Michigan.
He has been in the US for over 20 years and has been a contributing member to his community. I have seen firsthand the care and love he has for his children, as he plays with them outside our shared apartment building, and as well as his care for our community, helping neighbors with their groceries and the occasional car troubles.
His family has been torn apart, and the impact is overwhelming on him, his wife and three children. While we have successfully won bail for him, they now face increased financial burdens in order to pay for legal fees, as well as regular day-to-day needs (food, rent, school supplies).
I am raising funds to try and help this family as they navigate this difficult and terrifying time.
