“Track is an amazing sport, an Olympic sport, but there isn’t much money in the game, even at the highest level in the country. Athletes don’t compete in sports like decathlon for money or fame, they do it purely for the love of sport.” Nick Conn, Owner of Santa Barbara Strength in Goleta, CA.

The Decathlon is the most difficult event in Track and Field. Many athletes compete in only one event… Imagine participating in 10 events in just two days. Only a decathlete can truly understand the rigors of competing in this sport. Derek knows it’s ups and downs intimately as he has his sights set on moving up the national rankings to compete for a spot on the 2016 Olympic Team.

Derek needs our support to be successful. Track is one of the lowest paid sports in this country. This is your chance to share in the Olympic dream and join Derek in his journey to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His goal is not a pipe dream as Derek has already placed 9th at the Pan American Games for the last 2 years in a row and has been ranked among the top Decathletes in the United States consistently over the last few years. Participating in an international level of competition is something only a handful of athletes get to experience. If one needs to gain perspective on the “why” simply look at his expression in the image below… Genuine elation after having won the pole vault at the 2015 Pan American Games.

Our goal is to raise $75,000 over the next 6 months to deliver Derek to the 2016 Olympic Games at the top of his game. So don’t be shy, hit that donate button, be generous and challenge your friends to do the same.

The training time is included above because lost salary over these last two years is a sacrifice that Derek has made and will continue to make until his journey to the Olympics is complete and he can pursue a full time career.

Derek had a choice to make, after Graduating with a Bachelor’s in Environmental Studies, to pursue a career in the field or extending his Track and Field career. Derek chose Track and Field and is currently a coach and personal trainer at Santa Barbara Strength. Thankfully SBS is more than supportive of Derek’s goals. Owner Nick Conn understands the drive to compete and provides his employees the extreme flexibility they need to pursue competitions at the highest level.

Lost Salary: $27/hour x 30 hours/week training x 47 weeks.
