Doug, a former TripAdvisor Destination Expert for Isla Mujeres, Mexico, passed away far too early in life. He, and his wife, Michele, would take their annual wedding anniversary trip to their magical island off the Yucatan peninsula.
Anyone who knew Doug can attest to his love of the island and the many important friendships he made along the way. He would frequently share his knowledge with those planning their own visits and had a significant impact on how many others enjoyed their trip.
He was known for his "Trip Reports" (see also) where he chronicled each and every day of his time spent in paradise. These are written in great detail and provide more insight than any single experience. In reading any one of them, it is plain to see the relationships he cultivated, not only with that special place, but also with the people who inhabited it.
As an experienced SCUBA diver who traveled to several destinations around the globe, one of his favorite places to dive was an underwater museum between the island and the mainland. It is "run by a non-profit organization based in Cancún, Mexico devoted to the art of conservation with the objective of saving the nearby coral reefs by providing an alternative destination for divers" - Wikipedia.
In his memory, we would like to commission a piece of artwork to be added to the collection of underwater statues at Manchones Reef, a part of the Museo Subacuático de Arte (MUSA) project between Cancun and Isla Mujeres. The family is asking anyone wishing to honor his memory to donate to this cause so that he can forever have a physical presence on "his island."
Any excess proceeds will be donated to various non-profit groups in his name, including Isla Animals and MUSA, the organization responsible for the project in his name. We will be continuing our research to see how to best honor him and will post updates to this page as further details are finalized.
