Dear Family and Friends,
For those of you who know Jeff Smith you know what a great person he is and how selfless and caring he has been working with families and children with Autism over many years. He has also worked as a teacher assistant for many years at YMCA and in food prep at Ursinus College. Jeff is a dedicated family man with three children (Leah a freshman at Shippensburg University, Emily and William are both in their junior year of high school) and Darlene his wife of 23 years.
On December 30th, 2018 his life and the life of his family was changed. Jeffrey began complaining about tingling on the right side of his body, was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, and then was flown to Thomas Jefferson by life flight medical helicopter due to bleeding in his brain. Unfortunately, the news was grim and Jeffrey had a debilitating stroke and was completely paralyzed on his right side. After a week at Jefferson he then spent 4 weeks at an acute care facility, however could not return home and is now in a sub-acute rehabilitation center. Jeffery is completely paralyzed in his right arm with partial paralysis in his right leg and requires 24 hour a day/7 days a week care without the ability to care for himself.
This has had a significant impact on his family! Darlene is working 2 jobs, is now both mom and dad, taking care of the house, taking care of the bills, and visits Jeff every chance she gets. She is trying to be strong in the face of such an emotionally and physically exhausting job, yet her plate continues to overflow. There are bills coming in... They come in daily, and there are phone calls too.
Imagine having to choose between paying your mortgage or paying a medical bill.
Imagine having to choose between seeing your son or daughter in the school play or visiting your husband in a nursing care facility.
Imagine having to fill out endless paperwork with the hopes that maybe, just maybe you can get help with the medical bills that keep coming in.
Imagine having to change your dreams, and your life in the blink of an eye.
Imagine not knowing if your husband or father will ever be coming home.
Darlene has been so grateful for the support of her family, friends, and community. She is humble and won’t ask for help, so I am!
Please help Darlene and her family. Any GO FUND ME money will be used to help Darlene pay current home and medical bills, as well as any future medical care needed for Jeff.
To help get the word out, you can share the link to your Facebook Timeline!” Any amount will help!
