Friends – as many of you have heard, one of our own is facing some very real health challenges. Kim Curtis was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of January. Things have been moving relatively swiftly with her care. She had a left mastectomy on Feb 14 and will be starting chemo soon after, once her body is ready for it. Although UVA will be providing her with excellent care and support, there are going to be some significant expenses that will not be covered by insurance and are not manageable on a resident stipend. One of those is a scalp cooling cap for her to use during chemo to help decrease the significant hair loss associated with chemo and help her feel more like herself during and after her treatments. Another uncovered expense is the cost of freezing embryo's/egg's, to ensure that in the event chemo affects her ovarian function that she is still able to have children.
