Let's walk it up for Ethel

My son, Luc and I (now a 65 year old pensioner) are going to attempt a 415 km pilgrimage/walk through Italy in June.

The reason for this walk is on the one hand a time for personal reflection and spiritual refreshment, but on the other to try and raise money for the Ubuntu Community Care Centre – a registered non-profit/Public benefit organisation in South Africa.

One of the UCCC’s main objectives is to ensure the well-being of children focusing primarily on their education.

One child who has benefitted from this help is Ethel Gama. She has been with the organisation since she was in Grade 4 and is now in Grade 11. Last year, she passed all her subjects with  distinctions. What a gifted, diligent young lady she is! She will be matriculating next year and would very much like to go to university.

Ethel lives with her mother, who was unemployed until recently and now has a part time job, and her sister. They live in a small two roomed informal dwelling. Despite the hardships they have faced, Ethel is hardworking and has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. She is determined to do something that will change her family’s situation, benefit her community and is considering doing Medicine.

Mon fils Luc et moi-même (maintenant une pensionnée de 65 ans) allons entamer un pèlerinage de 415km à travers l’Italie en Juin.

Les raisons de ce pèlerinage sont d’une part un temps de ressourcement et de réflexion personnels, et d’autre part un moyen de récolter des fonds pour l’Ubuntu Community Care Center, une petite ASBL indépendante en Afrique du Sud.

Un des principaux objectifs de l’UCCC est d’assurer le bien être d’enfants dans le besoin, en se concentrant principalement sur leur éducation.

Ethel Gama est une des enfants qui a bénéficié de cette aide. Elle a rejoint l’Organisation durant sa 4ème primaire et vient d’entamer sa 5ème secondaire. L’an dernier, elle a terminé sa 4ème année avec distinction dans toutes les matières. Quelle jeune fille douée et consciencieuse ! Elle terminera sa Rhéto l’an prochain et souhaite ardemment entamer l’université.

Ethel vit avec sa maman et sa jeune sœur. Sa maman a été sans emploi durant plusieurs années et travaille maintenant à temps partiel. Elles partagent un très petit abri de deux pièces. Malgré toutes leurs difficultés, Ethel est travailleuse et a une soif de connaissance insatiable. Elle est décidée à faire ce qu’il faut pour améliorer les conditions de vie de sa famille, et aider sa communauté. Elle envisage de faire Médecine.
