It was Monday, June 1st. The third night of riots and protests and the second night of mandated curfew in DC.
I had just got back to my apartment in Southeast, right off of Good Hope Road. Due to being furloughed from work and having no income for rent, I was actually in the process of moving out and had been busy all day moving my belongings.
I still had had my most precious belongings with me in the car, including my Pioneer Mixer, an 8-channel Mackie mixer and my MacBook amongst other things like adapters, cables, interfaces and my personal things like clothes, shoes, phone, keys and wallet.
The day had been a long one, so after returning from my mothers place in MD, I decided to take a few minutes to gather my thoughts and I quickly dozed off for not more than 10-15 minutes.
Suddenly, I woke up to commotion outside the vehicle and noticed two masked individuals circling the car. I quickly jerked and try to scare them away thinking they were adolescents that were just curious. I quickly realized that these were armed men with intent of taking what they could at all costs.
Not more than a few seconds after I came to my senses, the individual closest to my window began to speak and eventually yell, “Get the f*** out the car!” He said it several times before I reacted. But I knew I was defenseless because not only had I just woken up in my car, but I had no weapons to defend myself with. I was outnumbered and the main perpetrator was holding a gun to the window.
I decided in order to insure my safety, I decided to comply. I got out of my car without grabbing any of my things. They quickly got in and drove off, but not before the getaway car arrived with two more people to confirm their new acquisition.
This is wasn’t my first time being robbed. But never at gunpoint. It’s traumatizing for anyone, no matter what.
Thanks to the quick actions of myself, the police, my child’s mother who’s the owner of the vehicle, and the ‘Find My Iphone’ app, I was able to locate the vehicle. The police towed it to a safe location at my request.
The following days I spent working on getting a police report, and that Wednesday I took it to the tow lot where the car was stored. I had no phone, keys, wallet or even cash. Just hope and the help of my mother and friends.
When I got inside of the car to look what was left behind, there was nothing but a few cables, my trusty USB and house keys.
I thank God for the opportunity to see a new day and tell this story. Hopefully inspiring change and/or awareness. I’m not at a loss for much, in fact many of these things like my IPhone and Pioneer mixer had a warranty or could be easily replaced.
However, my sturdy work laptop, a MacBook with my decal on it is gone and I have no means to get a new one without a stable job and/or gigs. We are still experiencing the effects of COVID-19.
This is is my fundraiser to purchase a new laptop in order to continue my mission of filling dance floors with love and light.
Im not the first person to experience this, and I won’t be the last. Hopefully, this raises awareness for some of you. Pay attention to my mistakes and always check your surroundings. In the chance where you might feel comfortable to let your guard down in a public space, always have a back-up plan.
My my goal is to raise $2200 for a new MacBook Pro 16GB. It will be used to for work purposes and personal endeavors. Mainly to store my music library and software.
I will take responsibility of getting a warranty for it, but I need your help with the initial purchase. Even a penny makes a difference.
Thanks to to all who have already donated via CashApp or in person. I will be sending a ‘Thank you’ to every single donor. I also can provide a police report of the account and/or any receipts for the purchase of this new laptop.
Again, thank you all and stay vigilant. It’s summer and it’s hot out there, people are hungry and can be very selfish. I’m not perfect myself but this event will make me think much more critically about my decisions and how they affect people.
Peace and blessings to you all, you already know the flow.
