DJ Claywell - Getting him well and home for good

My best friend and his wife welcomed a baby boy into the world a week after my daughter was born. At a check up a few months before he was born they found out that he had a 2 vessel umbilical cord and that he could possibly face some pretty serious complications because of it. At 32 weeks mom was at a check up and admitted to the neighboring hospital in pre term labor. The doctors thought it was possible this could be due to excess fluid in the amniotic sac. They also thought this could be due to a possible tracheoesophageal fistula (pretty much meaning the top of the mouth / airway was all mixed up and not connected to his belly). With some meds and procedures to draw the excess fluid out, baby was able to stay inside mama and keep growing to get healthier and bigger to make any possible outcome safer for any needed surgery. Birthing was scheduled for a Norfolk General labor and delivery making it a quick trip to CHKD if indeed DJ was born with the possible issue. Doctors confirmed the tracheoesophageal fistula and he was intubated and put on a feeding tube to prepare for surgery. First surgery was at 3 days old to connect the mixed up parts and make him able to eat on his own. Surgery went as planned and following a 7 week NICU stay he was able to go home with mom and dad. Part of this procedure required some possible esophageal dilation. This turned out to be pretty much once a week. 10-12 dilations later mom and dad decided they needed to figure something else out as this was a lot of anesthesia, pain and exhaustion for everyone. The following week took them on a 14 hour drive to Boston Children’s Hospital for a second opinion. They were admitted and a plan was developed by the doctors to repair his esophagus as well as his airway. This is what they believe is the best course of action. About 10 hours into the surgery DJ was not doing well under anesthesia and with the stress of the surgery, so the doctors decided to pause the procedure. DJ was again intubated, put on a ventilator and sedated to recover so he can get healthy enough to finish the surgery. They have been in Boston living in a hotel and in and out of the hospital for about a month now and not sure when they will all be able to come back. All of their sick leave and vacation has been used up. Mom and dad are able to work remotely but essentially paying multiple mortgages and medical expenses of an unknown amount. Any kind of help would greatly relieve the financial burden and help mom and dad breath so they are able to focus on being there for DJ.
