I am raising money for the Blacks In Industrial Organizational Psychology group. This group is a critical voice which is missing from current discussions on organizational culture, diversity, equity and inclusion, and police reform.
The Blacks in IO group is the vision of two founders; Macy Cheeks and Shavonne Holman. While at Howard University, Macy and Shavonne formed a bond that would endure until this day. Their experience at the prominent HBCU also allowed them to see and understand the need for building bonds within the black professional community.
That need has never been more apparent than in the Covid-19 pandemic climate. Blacks in IO would meet regularly in the DC area, and was the favorite of local graduates from such places as University of Maryland, Baltimore County, University of Maryland, College Park, University of Chicago, and George Washington to name a few.
Between March and April of 2020, the group converted to a virtual platform. By the time Black Lives Matter protests erupted in the nation everywhere, the group had swelled to over 300 regular participants, clambering for calls to action with concern for the black community, our industry and the nation as a whole.
Industrial Organizational Psychologists create all of our human processes. We are the DNA that makes HR. We do this for every place you can imagine, from the chain restaurants where you go to eat to your local police department.
Our industry is controlled by the majority group, like most other structures in our society. White Americans create the processes, assessments, selection tests, job satisfaction surveys, performance metrics, compensation schedules and the literature. Other ethnic groups constantly work to fit within this framework.
By donating to the Blacks in IO Psychology group, you are supporting an underrepresented group of Psychologists who will continue to shape the world of work to make it better for all of us.
The proceeds of your donation will go to some of the following startup expenses:
- Website upgrades and maintenance
- Application for 501c6 status
- Virtual Meeting infrastructure
- File storage and communication systems
Although your donation is not tax deductible at this moment it will allow the group to set up a tax deductible revenue stream which will sustain the organization for years to come.
