Diverse Books for Sycamore

In light of recent events, we are hoping to support a continued emphasis on diversity in Sycamore.  Looking around the district, the diversity of our schools is evident, and we as family, friends, and students of Sycamore want to help continue this education by purchasing books for our K-4 elementary classrooms.  The impact of diverse images and stories is clear for all children; picture books allow kids to see themselves and their peers in the books they read, empowering them to see all futures as a possibility.

The teachers and staff in our district regularly spend their own money to purchase items for their classrooms, including books for their classroom libraries. They generously supplement district-provided resources, enhancing education for their students.  To make a small impact in our district and for our teachers, our goal is to raise enough money to purchase three books featuring children of color and different ethnicities for each K-4 classroom teacher. We know that many elementary school teachers in our district want to expand their libraries beyond what they already include. We will work with the elementary schools to determine what the best books are for each of their classrooms.

We are working with the Blue Manatee Literacy Project, a local nonprofit located in Oakley.  The specialists there will curate a list of superior diverse literature and allow our teachers to select the titles that they want for their classroom.  For every book we purchase, a book will be donated to a disadvantaged reader in the Cincinnati area!  We also have an anonymous donor who has generously agreed to match the amount raised, up to $5000, which will allow the purchase of even more books!

Many of us are currently trying to find more ways to support the equality of all people.   This is a tangible way to help and support our community, as it will bring additional resources to the classroom. We hope that you will see this as a great way that you can make an impact in our community.  This is a small step towards advocating for all people, but an important one.  Thank you for your support, our teachers will be so grateful!
