Running a marathon is difficult. It requires intentional awareness of so much of your life for months to cross the finishing line: tracking miles, coordinating meals, nursing injuries, and the constant awareness that no matter how much you prepare, it is going to kick your butt. That is nothing compared to the lifelong awareness that people with Type 1 Diabetes are tasked with. Tracking blood sugar levels, coordinating meals in advance to did the right amount of insulin, and the awareness that no matter how much you prepare, it is going to kick your butt. The difference is that a marathon only lasts a few hours. Diabetes doesn’t have a finish line.

Three of the people that I hold closest to my heart: my beautiful wife and my less beautiful brother’s-in-law, all deal with having type 1 diabetes. I love the three of them to death and would do anything to help them make their lives easier. So, that’s where we all come in. I am going to dedicate myself to training and completing the San Diego Rock N Roll Marathon on June 4, 2023.
