Hey everyone!!! My name is Rich Diienno, and I am the Founder of Disc Golf Recovery Ohio LLC. The purpose of the program is to provide those in active recovery from addiction a positive outlet that I firmly believe can have a huge impact for someone in maintaining their recovery.
The idea for the program began while I was in treatment at Basecamp Recovery. Not only has Disc Golf been a huge part of my own recovery, but I realized that I could use the sport as outreach to help others like myself and give them a constructive outlet that they can use to keep their mind busy, have something positive to focus on and give them something to look forward to again. Some of the most debilitating feelings in addiction are the sense of isolation and losing the joy one experiences in even our most favorite things in life that we once loved. For me, the world seemed so dark that the thought of seeing even the smallest amount of light ever again felt impossible. Disc golf provided that missing piece of the puzzle that helped me to not only maintain my recovery, but also find a sense of community. After receiving the support of both staff and other patients while in treatment I realized I had the opportunity to give back by helping others find that missing piece for themselves.
I'm asking for the stated amount to help cover the start-up costs. Donations will be going to a wide variety of things to be able to get the program rolling but mainly to have enough equipment as well as help with a few startup costs until I gain enough momentum. When I take work with new people one of their first questions is how much does it cost, so provide them with their own beginner set to get them started. This way they have what they need to get out and start playing the sport, I don't want new players who are committed to their recovery to not give it a chance simply because they cannot afford discs in the beginning of their journey, so all I ask is that they show up and we'll get them started. I will also need to pick up extra disc golf baskets. A few would be kept on site to use for any groups I would host, and I would donate a basket and small stock of discs to each new center that uses the program. I have been fortunate enough to receive used discs as donations from people who support the idea for the program, but different centers will vary in size and I need to have enough equipment for any sized group. I've worked with Seacrest Recovery, Minerva park Inpatient Facility and Freedom Recovery. Most recently I've been exchanging emails with a middle school in Hilliard that is interested in getting the kids involved and expanding to other schools as well. Disc Golf can benefit people of all ages.
