My dad, Daniel Lister, is a US Army veteran who lost his leg to an IED while serving in Afghanistan as a combat engineer. He was medically and honorably discharged with over 150 surgeries, and his disability has been a huge challenge since, but he’s always been able to tough it out and carry on.

My dad uses a wheelchair now, and we’ve been blessed that the Department of Veterans Affairs was recently willing to pay for some updates to our home to make the house more accessible.

However, that blessing has recently turned into a curse.

The VA-approved contractor we used left weather-exposed openings in both our existing home and the modest new additions. This left our entire house open to water damage and flooding.

Even after the first several instances of water coming into the home, the contractor did not fix the new damage or block future damage.

We found out that the contractor had lied to the VA about having insurance to cover accidents like this, and with our homeowners insurance and the VA currently outright refusing to cover the claim, we are left with the costs.

We’re still pursuing our options for relief, but in the meantime, our house is in shambles. The flooring on the ground level is ripped out, walls and ceilings are exposed, and the new improvements are still uncovered. Our family of six lives trapped on the second story in our home, and the property is still vulnerable to new flooding and mold.

It’s even worse that this is happening during cold weather and the holiday seasons.

Please help us raise the money to fix the house of this Purple Heart recipient and his family so he can have comfort and access. We have a new, reliable contractor ready to start work once we have funding, and we’re only asking for what we absolutely need to mitigate the damage and get the house usable.

The VA will eventually cover their own separate accessibility improvements that are still incomplete, but the house that was wrecked outside their additions has to be fixed without their help, as far as they’re currently concerned.

We appreciate anything you can do, whether it’s giving a small donation or sharing this post. We know that lots of people are in need right now, but if you are one of the lucky people who isn’t, please consider helping.

Thank you in advance, and have a Merry Christmas!
