Disabled Officiating from a Powered Weelchair

I have been a Motability user since August 2018 having been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in June 2018. Once I was diagnosed with cancer and given a prognosis of 6 - 18 months to live I came up with a saying to keep my spirits up and inspire other people. My saying is that I am "Still smiling and still strong".

Unfortunately, owing to a reduction in my capacity to stand for long periods of time following chemotherapy and the requirements of quick physical activity in umpiring a game I need to find an alternative way of being in the right place at the right time. Therefore, a powered wheelchair that gives me the movement I need would be ideal. My mental capacity is still at an acceptable level for cricket umpiring and I wish to continue my love of cricket and the joy I get from the game.

I am a Committee member of the ECB Shropshire Association of Cricket Officials and a qualified and registered cricket umpire. I have previously officiated in Premiership and various League Cricket Matches in the Shropshire County Cricket League over many years. In addition, I have also officiated Shropshire County Youth Development and competitive County Matches, Shropshire County Disability Cricket Matches, the annual Shrewsbury Schools Cricket Festival and the English Cricket Board (ECB) Ladies Cricket Recreational Development Festival which included Mentoring Women Umpires from across the United Kingdom.

My determination is to develop a powered wheelchair for umpiring would not only benefit myself but other individuals who have similar disabilities in a variety of sports. I am aware the ECB have a very successful National Disability Cricket programme where manual wheelchairs are in use for players. Indeed, having approached the Shropshire County Cricket Board Disability Co-ordinator, I have been offered the opportunity of continuing to umpire Shropshire County matches in 2020 and beyond with the aid of a powered wheelchair.

Without doubt, the potential to put in place a unique opportunity for individuals who wish to continue, develop or commence officiating, but not physically able to do so, is a positive move for inclusion at all levels in our diverse community. This is not just for cricket but for a wide variety of sport and encompasses all age groups.

To continue actively participating in Cricket in the role I wish to fulfil there is a requirement to raise £15,000. This breaks down to £7000 for the Powered Wheelchair. £5000 for the conversion of a Wheelchair Accesible Vehicle to transport the Wheelchair. £2000 to fund and develop appropriate protective equipment to wear when umpiring.

I am 61 years of age, married with six children and served with the Royal Navy in the Fleet Air Arm. I was invalided from the Royal Navy in 1978 with Type 1 Diabetes.

Please can you support and help this unique and inspirational project. In anticipation, thank you.
As I indicated at from the start - I'm still smiling and still strong.
