I am Philip Frederick III, married for 28 years to my lovely wife Cindy, and father of twin boys, Miles and Ted, 23 years old. Our family is not perfect, but we have been living the American Dream. I've also been living with Type 1 diabetes, which has been a nightmare.
I have had Type 1 insulin dependent diabetes for 30 years. It is under control due to diligent emphasis on diet, exercise, insulin therapy, and foot care. Diabetes has cost me a lot, both financially and physically, having previously lost most of my toes, a lot of teeth, many hospital stays, multiple surgeries, medications, doctors appointments, and time away from work. I haven't bought Christmas presents for my children in several years since all this has drained my resources.
In the past two years I've contracted the non curable MRSA virus in my right foot and recently contracted a nasty staph infection in my left foot. Both infections led to below the knee amputations. This has turned my world upside down, but there is hope for a normal life. With prosthetics, I am able to walk, ride my bike, cut the grass, and a few other activities most people take for granted. I do have a part time job working for Richmond Metropolitan Transit Authority as a toll attendant, a job I enjoy.
I've done everything in my power to be a good husband and father, by working hard to provide a decent, safe, middle class, Christian home for our boys to grow up in. I'm proud to say they are both college graduates, are employed as educators, have high ethics, treat others with respect and are a joy to be around.
My major hurdle is transportation to and from my job. Presently I am unable to drive, so I need to install hand controls into a dependable vehicle. The cost of the equipment, the installation, the training and a dependable vehicle is quite expensive, my vehicle is 17 years old and any more investment in that is not practical.
My dreams of providing for my family will continue once I'm able to proceed towards my goal of independent mobility.
I am hoping my friends here and those I am destined to meet, can make a small contribution and assist me in my time of need.
