In the Wild West, three Asian girls fight for their freedom from Tofu, a Chinatown crime boss who wants them back, “Dead or Alive.”
If you want to support a revolutionary and entertaining film that will rock the status quo of mainstream media, this project is for you. Led by female action heroines, the primarily Asian cast takes center stage, not stereotypical side roles. Featuring engaging, anime-inspired characters, this is a unique tale embodying the spirit of the American West. It’s “Kill Bill” goes West meets “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.”
ABOUT COWGIRL SUSHI PRODUCTIONS
June Inuzuka is the founder of Cowgirl Sushi Productions (Denver, CO) and is the writer, director and executive producer of “Dirty Rotten Tofu and the Gohan Girls”. This passion project's script was a semi-finalist in the Diverse Voices Short Script Competition and listed as a Top 10 Best Western Short Script in 2019 by Coverfly's Red List. The film is a sponsored project of the Silverton Film Commission (non-fiscal). June's documentary, “Dharma Road” was nominated as “Best Documentary Short” by the Asians on Film festival in 2015 and premiered at the Japanese National Museum.

What makes this film special is the family team that came together from as far away as Canada to make it. Steve, June’s life partner, is Executive Producer and the film’s Covid Compliance Supervisor. Andrea, her daughter, designed the web page. Her son, Matao, acts in the film and designed the poster/crew shirts. And Fuji, her youngest, is a producer, storyboard artist, costume assistant and B.T.S. producer and has been helping develop this project since day 1. Howard, June’s brother-in-law, is an actor as well as the Casting Director. Her niece, Kimiko, is the Production Coordinator and Rena, her sister-in-law, is the head of catering. Because of their support, this project was able to be filmed in the Spring of 2021.
WHY THIS FILM NEEDS TO BE MADE
Rachel Griffith, actress and director said, “In fiction and reality, young women need to see a heroine’s journey in order to become heroines themselves” These are the characters I wish I had seen when I was a girl. It is the story of three girls who escape forced prostitution and obtain the skills to protect themselves, each other and defeat the predators that keep them on the run. They decide to turn the tables and pay whatever the cost to kill the man who stands between them and their freedom.
THE IMPACT OF THIS FILM
Cowgirl Sushi Productions believes diversity in both creators and crew lead to films that expand the universe of creative possibility, enriches American culture and moves us all in a positive direction.
“Dirty Rotten Tofu” takes place in Denver, Colorado's 1880's Chinatown when "Yellow Peril" or fear and hatred of the Chinese was reaching its peak. There were cries for the Chinese to “Go Home!” Many asian lives were taken along with Chinatowns all over the west as they were burned and destroyed. Asians were seen as less than human and Asian women property to be used and discarded. Racial hatred and violence is deeply rooted in American history and and as the current media coverage of attacks on minorities continues, it is imperative we tell our stories and inspire each other to continue to fight and be heard.
