“Standing with One Thousand”
The Problem: Human Slavery in Our Time
Never in human history has the plague of human trafficking been worse than it is today! Every year, millions of people are trafficked around the world. It is estimated that 80% of these are women, and half are children. The vast majority of those who are trafficked are used in the sex trade. It is an estimated 32 billion dollar a year industry. There are well documented accounts of girls as young as 10 who are sold into slavery in order for some man to bid on her virginity. If the child is not cooperative, she is drugged and beaten until she submits. One eyewitness account from Asia describes how one child, who would not give in, was made an example of by being brought into the center of a group of girls and savagely murdered while the other girls were forced to look on. In some parts of Eastern Europe, children who are forced out of the orphanage due to their age are abducted and murdered for their organs to be sold on the black market.
The Solution: “Svetlana’s Story” repeated over and over again!
What if we could stop this before it happens? Consider the true story of Svetlana which is briefly told in the video above. Svetlana is the youngest of 4 children. Her mother abandoned her in the hospital directly after she was born. Svetlana was sent to an orphanage to live out her life. When she was 3 years old, a foster family took her in and she lived with them for 6 years. They then decided that they didn’t want her anymore and she was abandoned once again and sent back to the orphanage. This is when she met Olga, one of the helpers of the DCHA family. She began working with Svetlana, teaching her life skills and showing her what it was like being part of a family. When Svetlana was 15 years old, the orphanage where she was housed was shut down. She had two choices: she could go to another orphanage or she could leave and be on her own. To be on her own at 15 would have made her a prime target for traffickers who prey on girls leaving the orphanages. Instead, because of the love shown to her by Olga, she went to live with her and go to school. Now Svetlana spends much of her free time in orphanages similar to the one she grew up in working with the children so that they don’t become victims of human trafficking.
DCHA is working together with Olga to help her expand her program in order to serve more orphans. We are able to assist her by providing the financial support to acquire more apartments and the recruitment and training of mentors. DCHA will offer this proven model as a long-term solution in other countries as well where there are vulnerable children who are wards of the state. This is how we “help the helpers” do what they do! DirectConnect Humanitarian Aid also funds programs that help those who have already been trafficked. It is heartbreaking what these women have gone through. We now have the ability to save them before they are trafficked.
The Program: “Standing with One Thousand!”
What can you do to make a profound difference in the lives of the helpless and hopeless? DCHA’s “Standing with One Thousand” is a plea for 1,000 people to pledge $25.00 per month to help fund programs like this. When you stand with one thousand, your money is used to help the helpers who are helping the helpless. These children are vulnerable. They need an advocate who will stand to give them the opportunity to be free and make their own choices in life, and not be preyed upon by the traffickers who will only use them and throw them away. They have already been abandoned by their parents and society. We have the opportunity to make a life-altering difference in their lives. Will you stand with us?
Your tax-deductible gift will go to fund the worthwhile programs DCHA is involved in. This is not limited to stopping human trafficking. DCHA funds clinics in remote parts of the world where there is no other medical care. We build bridges that help people conduct trade and make a living. We help numerous orphanages around the world.
The Organization: Direct Connect Humanitarian Aid a ( 501(c)(3) organization)
At DirectConnect Humanitarian Aid, we have a motto that we live by: We are “Helping the Helpers Help the Helpless”. We identify the indigenous people and organizations who are tirelessly working in the areas where these horrific events are taking place. They use their own funds and resources because they love the children and they want to make a difference. They usually lack the complete resources they need in order to do as much as the work requires. We directly follow up with these programs by visiting the work in country to make sure the money is being spent the way it was intended to be. This provides our donors with the accountability that is often times lacking in larger non-profit organizations.
