Hello, my name is Brenda Hagen. My family was one of so many that were impacted by ex-typhoon Halong in the remote village of Kipnuk ,Alaska, and as you can imagine, all already have so many needs. I am sure you have seen the stories shared by those in homes, floating away in the dark and rough waters and winds as high as 100MPH. We have our fair share of storms, but nothing like this! Several people do not know where their homes are. My Mom, Julia and my Gram Catherine were lifted from the house by the Coast Guard and were brought to Bethel shortly after that. My mom had 2 backpacks with a set of clothes and care items as my Gram who is 90 relies on the total care of my mom (feeding, briefs and bathing etc.;).
I live far away from them, 3 flights away to be exact, but now it will be 2 as they are in Bethel. I would like to go to them as soon as I can and take care of what I can as far as immediate needs by shopping in Anchorage on my way, as Bethel is limited and very expensive. I predict that they will be there for months, if not a year or longer. Kipnuk is unrecognizable, powerlines are broken, homes devastated, subsistence food ruined that people live on through the winter months (berries, moose, fish, seal, walrus).
There are bigger entities raising relief funds as well, but a few people reached out to me on how they could give directly to my family's immediate needs. Everything from Food, clothing, hygiene products, charging blocks, towels, bedding, to big things like building materials (we are not sure yet how this will look as the runway was closed) if we can go to Kipnuk with a crew we may need to fly in insulation, generators, heaters, dehumidifiers, KILZ, plywood, jacks, tools, so many things, but we are uncertain how this will look as of now. It is a race against winter setting in as well, for now I will try not to worry and be thankful for the quick response of our state the the coast guard and miliatry. For now what I can do, I will go and see my mom and Gram in Bethel, as well as any other family that has been evacuated at that time. There were 587 people at the school in Kipnuk, displaced. I plan to shop for what is needed, as well as ship requested items via Lynden Air Cargo in Anchorage that will go to Kipnuk .
Feel free to reach out to me if youd rather give directly. It has been a rough couple of days and will continue to be as the shock and grief set in for those that went through this storm at home and the ones that live far away as well. We love Kipnuk, we love our community, it's full of love and generosity, and I know that people from all over will come to help in clean up and relief efforts, and to bring some hope, encouragement, and physical needs of people, people in need.
Thank you to those that have prayed, reached out and have shared the story. Thank you to the outpouring of donations in Anchorage, in Bethel, online and directly to anyone you love and know in Kipnuk!! In times like these, we are reminded of what matters most and that is life, our friends, our families and the people that raised us, it truly does take a village.
I'll share a verse that Pastor Tim Samson shared via VHF on 10/11/25 in the night, before the storm would hit.
The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord enthrones as King forever. Psalm 29:10
