DIRE HELP NEEDED 4 MOM & SON
Donation protected
No one really wants to believe we live in a world that is cruel and unjust, especially during the holidays. Sadly, to Lisa Webber and her son Xander that is exactly how it seems. A former nurse, Lisa literally devoted her life to caring for others; that was until a crippling work injury left her disabled, with no more than a meager fixed income to care for herself and Xander. Despite her own disability, Lisa continues to utilize her nursing skills to care for her beloved son because a reckless driver left him with life-altering brain damage at 15-years-old.
Xander's brain injury was devastating to Lisa, a single mother who lost her fiancé in the Iraq war; however, Xander continued to be a good student and remained positive that he would go on to college and live a fulfilling life. Even today, the brain damage is just a small part of the reason Xander requires around-the-clock care. Even after the harsh realities they had faced together, the very worst of their luck was yet to come.
The ceiling collapsed in their (now former) apartment due to corroded water pipes, exposing horrific and deadly black mold that would subsequently wreak havoc on the entire residence, as well as Xander's already asthmatic lungs. Xander and Lisa, now more than ever before, are fighting for his life.
Immediately following the incident it was clear Xander was in for extreme — extremely exhaustive, and extremely expensive — medical help. Lisa witnessed Xander endure innumerable treatments, all ending in failure. Ultimately, doctors concluded that Xander's body was resistant to normal treatment for mold exposure because he had developed Allergic Broncho-Pulmonary Aspergillosis (APBA). Doctors treated Xander's condition with steroids and anti-fungal medications — the common treatment protocol for APBA — for a year. Meanwhile, Xander's health continued to decline, and doctors ultimately concluded he was also resistant to all standard APBA treatment.
Xander and Lisa were devastated. His health was rapidly declining, and his body rejecting any and all available treatment. Finally, one specialist — a seeming light amidst all the surrounding darkness — told them about a trial medication that was proving positive in cases like Xander's. Though extremely expensive, the trial medication offered them hope — indeed, their only hope among overwhelming despair. Xander and Lisa were initially told he would receive 3 shots every 2 weeks for a year, all on an outpatient basis. Xander began receiving the medication. And for the first time in an endless series of failed medical treatments, heartaches, and declining health, Xander also began improving.
His improvement was short-lived. And the excitement felt by both Lisa and Xander would soon diminish when they learned that, due to federal regulations, his treatments would no longer be performed on an outpatient basis. He would have be admitted into the hospital and to receive the series of injections as an inpatient. The only treatments that offered any hope and truly, any quality of life for Xander, now cost more than Lisa can afford.
Xander was responding well and his health — as well as his spirits, hopes and dreams — were improving with the trial medication. The longer he goes without the medicine — and the longer he goes without help from others — the more his condition deteriorates. Without the treatments, hope is lost, and Xander's death is imminent.
In addition to Xander's health issues, Lisa has also learned the mold destroyed her immune system. She was diagnosed with Lupus, and doctors have found a lump in her right breast. Now she is not only faced with medical expenses for her son's care but with medical treatment for herself.
Upon learning of their predicament, Lisa and Xander's current landlord recently decided not to renew their lease, which expires on December 31st. Lisa has exhausted all efforts in obtaining legal help for their living situation only to be told she has no available options, and that her landlord can do this without cause or provication at any time. If this devoted mother and her beloved son do not receive immediate help, they will be facing loss of their home and loss of their lives. Loss of all hope is undoubtedly unavoidable.
The goal amount was established after Lisa's careful consideration, and includes the following: the continuation of extensive in-patient medical care for Xander's ABPA, currently owed medical bills, payment for his other medication, diagnostic and initial medical care for Lisa (including the Lupus treatment she has gone without, as well as a biopsy/diagnosis surrounding the lump in her right breast), charges for a moving company to pack and move Lisa and Xander — both disabled and in declining health, a down payment and first month's rent on a place to live for the two of them, and a month of living expenses and utility bills while they get settled in. Your donations are not just desperately needed, but utterly imperative for this mother and son — not for their comfort, but for their very survival.
