Helping a Tanzanian's Education

Donation protected
My goal  to fundraise $AUD 10 000, for the education fees of a Tanzanian, for a Diploma in Safari Guiding and Wildlife Management.
This story began one night with a mountain guide called Emmanueli.  I first met Emmanueli in Tanzania in September 2017. He was my head guide in my climb of Africa’s tallest mountain, Mt Kilimanjaro (5895m).  He impressed the expedition party of twenty with his skill and leadership capacity. On the night of the gruelling final ascent to the summit, which began at midnight, I turned back suffering from High Altitude Mountain Sickness at 5400 metres around 330 am. I self-rescued from that altitude, supported by Emmanueli locking arms with me,  to run through total darkness down steep volcanic scree slopes for over 2 hours to reach base camp.
At 5.30 am, over a hot drink to warm up, Emmanueli shared with me his dream of furthering his education, enabling him to progress in his career. However, the fees were beyond his means. Emmanueli’s strong aspiration for an education moved me to action.  As dawn approached, I  pledged to help my trekking hero complete his studies, and this campaign was born.
My aim was to raise Emmanueli's education funds in 12 months which I did. it enabled him to have some training towards his fullest potential as a leader, educator and protector of African wildlife.  Sadly, the harsh realities of Tanzanian life, balancing work, the commute to study, and supporting a young family saw him drop out of studies some months ago.
So the search began, with Vedasta Izoba, Principal of the School for Safari Guides in Arusha, Tanzania to find a suitable candidate.
A new scholarship recipient was found: his name is Nassoro.
Nassoro could not afford his school fees, but already impressed with his determination to complete his education, despite the struggles he has had to come this far. So he now will not have to worry any more as he is now fully funded for his studies.
Tanzania is a poor country. The average wage for a Tanzanian is just USD $3 per day.  Nassaro is part of a new generation that, if provided with educational opportunity,  can bring hope and offer leadership for African nations to move forward into the future-both for their people, and for the wildlife they manage.  Gaining a Diploma will enable Nassaro to obtain more consistent work as a safari guide and wildlife manager. Steady employment will better position him to support and provide for his future.
Every $1 raised towards Nassaro's education will have a multiplying effect. The long term value of this investment is not only in Nassaro's future, but that of his children’s  education as well.  I believe in absolute transparency how the funds raised will be used, and  I am doing this at very low cost. It is a non-tax deductable venture.
Nassaro began his Diploma  in January 2019. I hope to travel back to Tanzania  to see Nassaro  in Arusha, Tanzania one day.
As Nelson Mandela said:  ‘Education has the power to change the world.’ Please join me in making a difference by helping this aspirational young man in Africa to fulfil his dream of gaining an education by donating.
My campaign continued on through 2021 with ongoing support to Nassoro, encouraging him to always do his best, despite the challenges of a worldwide pandemic.
Nassoro graduated with his Diploma in Professional Tour Guiding in September 2021, on the anniversary of my climb of Mount Kilimanjaro.
It is my legacy of a scholarship  that moves forward  into the future with your generous help.
Sincerely, Catherine
