Diosa Annual Fundraiser Showcase

I have a special invitation to an exciting, thought-provoking, event!

Among other things October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and, as we do every year, my studio is producing a Showcase on Saturday the 1st to raise funds in support of Voices Against Violence.   Last year, the support we received  just over $2,000 for the Framingham-based organization that provides housing, advocacy, counseling, and escape planning/support for people leaving a violent home.  100% of the funds raised go directly to the men, women, and children who finally take the step to get out of danger and on the road to repairing their lives.

As a woman who has worked closely with women over the years, I cannot ignore the continued prevalence of domestic violence and the need for resources to help break the silence and end domestic violence.  Despite escaping violence decades ago and my keen awareness of the issue, I found myself precariously involved in another abusive relationship that I would not have been able to extricate myself from were it not for the support and help I got from my friends.  I am one of the lucky ones.  I am aware enough to recognize the signs and empowered enough through a network of wonderful women to get out before anything truly bad happened, but a great majority of domestic violence victims are not as lucky.  And so my commitment to this cause is stronger than ever.  No one should ever feel unsafe in their own home!

This year we have a special show planned.  Motivated by the loss of great artists like David Bowie and Prince, we decided to use their music to explore the story of Jake, an innocent boy making his way through a society that conditions him towards isolation and violence.  Through the lyrics of the late Prince, David Bowie, Ray Charles, and Michael Jackson, as well as contemporary artists like Badly Drawn Boy, Santana, Fallulah, Disturbed, and Weeknd, we will take a look at how the societal conditioning of our sweet, loving boys hurts us all.

The show will feature performances in Bellydance, Chair Dance, Contemporary Dance, Pole Dance and Yoga dance.  Particularly exciting is that some of the performers will be premiering pole dance routines that they will use in the regional championship competition on October 8th.  This promises to be a really exciting show!

If you can join us on Saturday October 1st, we promise to provoke your thoughts while we astound you with body-transforming dance and gravity-defying athletics!   A minimum donation of $25 will gain you access to the show and to the Silent Auction viewing table.  As always, a buffet dinner and beverages are included.  If you cannot join us, I hope you will consider a donation through our GoFundMe Page/Jake4VAV.

Between the minimum suggested donation of $25 that buys diapers for babies removed from violent homes to the $1,500 donation that pays rent for one month for a family escaping domestic violence, there are a great range of services that you can support.  If a donation is not your preferred means, please consider forwarding this email to friends and family.  The more people who come to the show or simply support, the better chance we have to save a life, since escape often happens when the life of a victim or the children is in danger.

Thank you for considering my invitation!  I hope you will join us and look forward to keeping you posted.
