Hello, my name is Dimitri Garbas. I never imagined I’d be writing something like this, but life has taken me down a road I never expected, and I need your help.
In 2017, I was living my dream. My amazing wife, Lisa, and I were expecting our first child. We were filled with hope and excitement for the future. But one morning, I woke up with a sore back and numbness down my left side.
At first, I thought it was nothing—a pulled muscle, maybe a pinched nerve. But deep down, I knew something was wrong. Days later, I was rushed to the hospital. That’s when our world was turned upside down. The doctors told me, “You have MS. Your life will never be the same again.” Those words still echo in my mind, especially in my darkest moments. MS is a relentless, incurable disease that attacks the central nervous system.
The medications didn’t work for me. I’ve faced pain, exhaustion, blurred vision, and muscle spasms. Each attack steals a little more of my strength and hope. But what hurts the most is the fear that I won’t be able to be the dad my children deserve. Today, Lisa and I are blessed with two beautiful children—Kristina and Joseph.
They are my world. My greatest wish is to be the active, loving, and present father they need and deserve. There is hope. Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) in Russia has given thousands of people with MS a second chance, with an 85% success rate at stopping the disease’s progression.
Sadly, in Australia, this treatment is only available to those with severe, irreversible disability. I can’t wait until it’s too late. For years, I have been fundraising for this treatment. But then the world changed. COVID-19 closed borders and made travel impossible.
Just as the world began to recover, the war in Ukraine made the journey even more dangerous and uncertain. Each year that passes is another year lost to this disease, another year Kristina and Joseph grow up without the healthy, active dad they deserve.
I am reaching out with all my heart, asking for your support. Your kindness, your prayers, and your generosity could give me the chance to fight for my future and my family. I am not giving up. With God in my heart and the love of my family and friends, I will keep fighting for the chance to live, to love, and to be there for those who need me most. If you can help in any way—by donating, sharing my story, or simply sending your love and prayers—I will be forever grateful.
Every bit brings me closer to hope, and to the chance to be the husband and father Kristina and Joseph need. Thank you for reading my story, and for being part of my fight. With love and gratitude, Dimitri Garbas
