On July 1st, our friend Darcie Garcia got the call that every parent dreads. Her youngest son, 18 year old Dmitri Garcia was on his way to the hospital, unresponsive.
Upon arrival, he was immediately hooked up to life-saving supports. The prognosis was grim and the following few days were enough to break even the toughest of spirits.
The restrictions at the hospital due to Covid-19 limited her time by his side and kept the rest of his family from being there. Darcie made the most of her time while she was with him, putting her time-tested brave and strong spirit to it's hardest test. She made the doctors see that he was a superstar football player, the captain of his team no less, a caretaker for their aging dog, a fan of Frank Sinatra, a quiet and kind young man who vowed to always take care of his Mom.
The bond that Darcie, Dmitri and Alonso Garcia have is one for the ages. Her boys are proud to show her off to their friends. They aren't just mother, son and brother, they are bonded to their core.
Devastatingly, all of Darcie's efforts, the video calls she played for him, the encouragement she gave him to heal and wake up, the prayers that went up from everyone she knew, were just not enough. Dmitri did not make it back home to help carry Bubba out for his next bathroom break.
Darcie made the incredibly selfless decision to have his organs donated. Dmitri Garcia had rare blood pumping through his veins, making him a miracle to many who desperately needed what he had left to give. His final honor walk included a hospital hallway lined with doctors and nurses, and his closest family following behind, singing Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds". A fitting farewell to a hero that is leaving this life, by giving life.
As Darcie Garcia looks to this next chapter in her life, she will, no doubt, have epic mountains to climb. Her family and church community will surely help her through, but things will never be the same. As the funny, positive, bold and beautiful soul that she is, there isn't someone she has met that doesn't love her. As we all grapple with how to help her through this, monetary support seems like a good place to start.
While we walk forward with her, one step at a time, hopefully this effort helps her to understand that Dmitri will be never be forgotten. That she is loved and that she will never be alone in this painful journey.
