After being declared cancer free in June, my dad’s cancer returned with a vengeance on his tongue and spread rapidly to the surrounding tissues all in and around his neck.
He first tried immunotherapy but it seemed to irritate his system and cause extreme lymphedema in his face. So much so that it his entire face, lips and eyes swole up to the point where his eyes were swollen shut and he had to get a trach put in again. Unfortunately, it did nothing to stop the cancer and large, vascular tumors have over taken over his neck, tongue, outer skin and inner tissue.
Since September, he has been in and out of the ER, sometimes 3x a week due to bleeding issues from the tumors. In a last ditch effort, my dad tried an aggressive form of chemo but unfortunately after only 3 rounds, he became so weak that his body could not handle anymore chemo.
My dad has been so strong and has fought such a hard battle but this disease from hell has taken him over and he has been in the hospital the last two weeks.
As of Friday, the oncology team and palliative care team advised us that there was nothing else that could be done and that it was time for us to call hospice services.
So, it breaks my heart to say but my Dad’s journey here on earth is coming to an end. He has been so strong and so resilient and fought one hell of a fight. Im so proud of him and I admire his strength and how he kept the hope and his humor alive up until he was too weak to do so. As of now, he is at Pearlview care center receiving hospice services and is resting comfortably and pain free.
Thankfully, although we are in the middle of this pandemic BS, my dad is able to have visitors (2 at a time) between the hours of 9-5. We’d like to keep it to just close friends and family and you do have to take a rapid COVID test, provided for free from Pearlview. So if you’d like to see my dad, please text, call or fb message me or my aunt Terry first.
Due to COVID, we plan to have a celebration of his life once numbers start to drop and it’s safe to be in larger groups. I certainly will keep you all updated.
In lieu of flowers, I started a go fund me to help me and our family with after-life costs.
Thank you to all of you who have offered support, encouraging words, prayers and thoughts for my dad, myself and my family as he’s gone through this battle. We appreciate it so very much. ❤️
