On March 20, the Digital Minds 5458 FIRST Robotics team won the 2015 FRC FIRST Robotics Sacramento Regional Competition and All Star Rookie Award. Digital Minds was founded on August 26, 2014 when team 1678 Citrus Circuits from Davis introduced their passion for robotics to student's from Pioneer and Woodland High School students in Woodland, CA. The team was then established under the After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens (ASSETs) program through the Yolo Center For Families (YCFF). These students from Pioneer and Woodland High Schools now have the opportunity to attend the 2015 FIRST Championship competition in Saint Louis, Missouri. Each member of the team put in a great deal of energy and hard work into qualifying to attend the championship and we are all thrilled to have the opportunity to attend this important STEM opportunity and educational event.
As a rookie team we never imagined we would be in this position. Our students are overcome with joy to have made it this far that not attending the championship would be crushing to the their hard work and team morale. That being said, we have used our current funds for tools, equipment, competition fees and other necessary expenses, and are now in need of additional funds to travel to the championship.
In order to participate and represent our Woodland community at the 2015 FIRST Championship competition we need to raise $10,000 to fund our trip. This includes $5,000 to reserve our spot in the championship and the remaining donations will cover transportation and accommodations.
We are contacting all community leaders like you to request financial assistance.
Any amount donated will be greatly appreciated and will go towards funding this important educational event.

Digital Minds is a robotics team that started in August when the Davis High team, Citrus Circuits, introduced their passion for robotics to Woodland students. Citrus Circuits is one of the top teams in the country and we are very lucky to have their team members and mentors as our mentors. These teams are part of the FIRST robotics organization, officially as FIRST Team 5458. FIRST stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. Its mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by having them participate in exciting mentor based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills.
Each year the teams must design, build and program a robot to compete against other teams. On January 3, the teams found out what particular tasks their robot had to do for this year's competition. Digital Minds will be competing in the Sacramento Regional competition at UC Davis on March 18-21, 2015.
As they start to design, build and program their robot the members are gaining valuable experience in computer programming, mechanical & electrical engineering, innovative problem solving, team building and leadership.
Participation in FIRST robotics helps with college admission, scholarships and getting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) jobs. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce over the last ten years, growth in STEM jobs three times as fast as growth in non-STEM jobs. STEM workers earn 26% more than non-STEM workers.
WE NEED YOUR HELP. We need to buy tools, a computer, machines and other mechanical equipment. We were fortunate to get a NASA grant, but most of the money has been spent on the robotics kit and other start up costs. We need to build a strong organization so we can help younger kids start teams and compete in their age categories.
