On the night of February 3rd at 3:30am, Diego Huber was brutally attacked with a machete while peacefully asleep in his parents living room. He was immediately taken by an ambulance to the Salem hospital to stop the severe blood loss and shortly after, due to the extent of his wounds, was air lifted to Portland’s OHSU hospital. When he arrived at OHSU, he was immediately rushed into surgery where over 15 surgeons and medical staff attended to the wounds on his head, neck, arms, and hands. Staples were used to stitch the back of his head and neck area. He was in ICU for about one week and for the first couple of days was on a breathing tube to keep his oxygen levels normal. He’s currently out of ICU and in the trauma ward at OHSU.
As a result of this brutal attack, Diego will have to endure many months of physical therapy and (emotional/mental) healing before gaining any sort of his normal life back. Thankfully, he did not suffer any injuries to his spinal cord or brain. He did, however, loose 4 fingers on his left hand and has suffered severe injuries to his right arm and hand. The doctors said that Diego will have some permanent physical limitations and it could take 1-2+ years before he is able to regain mobility of his arms and the use of either hands.
We, as his family, want to thank everyone for all of the prayers and emotional support towards Diego - he is very blessed by all of you. If you are able and willing, we are also asking for your help financially. Diego won’t be able to do any kind of work for about 1-2 years while he receives ongoing physical and mental therapy. Even when he is able to work again, Diego will likely have to change professions due to his physical limitations. Medical bills are currently in the hundreds of thousands along with his normal monthly bills. We thank you in advance for any amount you can contribute.
If you know Diego well, you won’t find it surprising that, even in his current situation, he is in good spirits and is showing improvements everyday towards his road to recovery. Diego wants to thank everyone who has reached out and those who have visited. He is incredibly grateful by all the outpouring of love and support as it has been a great encouragement for him. He welcomes calls via FaceTime. If you would like to visit him at OHSU, you can message him on social media.
