Diego is 13 years old and he's our hero. He is a brave, beautiful, joyful, strong-willed, loving boy. His diagnosis includes: Quadraplegic Spastic Cerebral Palsy; Microcephaly; Epilepsy; visual impairments; physical, intellectual, emotional, and speech delays. Along with these come a constant stream of large expenses - surgeries, therapies, durable medical equipment, personal care assistants, medications, adapted home modifications... the list goes on.
In his 13 years, this is the 1st time we've found the need to reach out for help like this from our family and friends. In Missouri, as almost all states, a child with a disability's Medicaid eligibility is determined by the parent's income. Based on our barely livable income, Diego's Medicaid assistance has been put on a spend-down of $1,116/
month. This means that after we pay the spend-down each month, Medicaid will pick up any out-of-pocket medical expenses over that. Without Medicaid as Diego's secondary coverage, out-of-pocket medical expenses for Diego average $5,000 per month.
Yes this is all very ridiculous, but it is also very real. This spend-down went into effect December 2017. While I am trying to fight this determination, we are still required to come up with t
he spend-downs for each month since then.
Those who know me, know how difficult it is for me to ask for help. This is a mountain I can not climb for Diego on my own. Any little donation is so very greatly appreciated.
