Diaz Family, 4 Cancers & 1 Alzheimer under 1 roof
Donation protected
3 members of my direct family (Clara, Humberto and Liza Diaz) are battling 4 Cancers and Alzheimer simultaneously under 1 roof, but we will overcome these adversities.
Hi All,
If you know me, you know it is difficult for me to disclose my personal issues, and even more difficult for me to ask for help. I never thought my family would be in this situation, as I have done everything emotionally, legally, and financially possible to support my family, but it has not been enough, even before the world started suffering from the current pandemic. Due to the illnesses that have ravaged my household, we are asking for your help.
My mother, Clara Diaz, 82, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in October 2017 along with arthritis, and my parents have to move back from Chile to Annandale, Virginia to aid in her care. In September 2017, my middle sister and her two children (17 and 10) also moved in to care for our mother 24/7, following the doctor’s recommendation. My father, Humberto Diaz, 75, (kidney and prostate cancer survivor) had a stroke due to a thrombosis (blood clot) on March 21, 2019. The doctors had to perform four blood transfusions to stabilize him. He continues to take medication for his asthma along with his annual cancer check-ups. In late 2019, my father began to work (5.5 hours, light duty) at a part time job to financially help our household of five people, which I had been supporting since 2014.
In early January of 2020, my younger sister, Liza Diaz, 46, was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer and subsequently, she was diagnosed with liver cancer as well. She decided to seek surgeries and treatment at Georgetown University Hospital since they successfully treated my father’s kidney and prostate cancer before. On January 30, 2020, she moved from Florida, with her husband and 5-year-old son. They cannot afford to pay a mortgage in Florida and rent in Virginia simultaneously, so they also live with us in Annandale.
Her stay with us will probably be for at least twelve (12) months or more. Her husband’s employer transferred my brother-in-law to work temporarily in Washington, D.C. to accommodate my sister’s need to receive the best care possible. On February 5, 2020, she had colon cancer surgery. She has started twelve cycles of chemotherapy and then, she will have another surgery on her liver followed by more chemotherapy.
Due to the pandemic, on March 13, 2020, my father was laid-off from his part time job, and on March 23, 2020, following doctor’s recommendations, my brother-in-law had to stop working because, while on chemotherapy my sister is immunocompromised. He works at the grocery store in very close contact with patrons and employees. He already used up his paid sick leave thus, he has no income.
On March 31, 2020, my father went in for his yearly cancer check, and was diagnosed with colon cancer. On April 14, 2020, he was diagnosed with liver cancer as well. He will start his chemotherapy (6 cycles) this week to treat his liver cancer and then, he will have surgery on his colon followed by more chemotherapy.
I tell you all of these details to give you a window in to how absolutely devastated and angry I am about my family’s current situation and my inability to fix everything for them. Nevertheless, my family and I have an unconditional faith in God, believing that God will show us the way to heal and successfully overcome these adversities
Due to the pandemic and my father’s diagnosis, I am the only one working (from home) and supporting my family. The outbreak has made things incredibly hard to manage. There is a lot a fear and anxiety in a household of nine (9) people and two pets, including seniors, cancer patients and minor children. But, we will not quit fighting.
I am also heartbroken to see my mom, sister and father going through their serious medical condition during this pandemic, but I must endure. I wish I could do even more and tell my family not to worry about anything, but this is beyond my resources right now. However, with God’s love along with the unconditional support, prayers and love from our friends and family, nothing is impossible.
Since I graduated from college, I have spent all my life helping others less fortunate, but now I must ask that others help me and my family. Right now, supporting my family both emotionally and financially it is getting tougher each day.
Due to their medical conditions and the pandemic, our primary expenses of utilities, medication, treatment, medical bills, groceries and others, have increased significantly higher than expected, making it very difficult to make ends meet with one salary for nine people. For that reason, I have made the difficult decision to share my family’s personal story with you to seek any assistance you can provide. I know that everyone is struggling during this hard time, so any assistance that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
I will also strongly appreciate if you share my fundraiser link with your friends, and among your networks. The more people hear about my family’s need, the more likely I will reach our fundraising goal. At least, this type of spreading it is for a good cause. I pray every day for my family as well as all of the others struggling during this difficult time, keeping a positive attitude and faith in God that we will all overcome these adversities. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions.
In advance, I thank you for your kindness.
