My name is Melissa and I am fundraising for the most amazing person I know. My mom Diane DeHerrera is 66 years old, she worked the same job for nearly 34 years. Of that 34 years I can only count a handful of times she even called in. She has always been very healthy and active. In March of 2022 she went to the dr because her stomach hadn’t been feeling well. She was given meds for gas and sent on her way. With no relief she made another appointment and was to see her Dr on May 3rd. April 30th she went to the ER after being up all night with severe discomfort and nausea. While at the ER they did a CT, this simple scan was able to bring our families greatest fears to life.
This woman is not only my mom, she is my best friend, my rock, my biggest supporter and cheerleader, the person I call when something good happens , the shoulder I cry on when my world falls apart. She is the glue that holds our family together and makes the world a bearable place to live. She has been everything to me for 44 years, and I have always known that no matter what she is only a call away. SHE IS MY HERO!!!! If I can become just half the woman she is , then I will have succeeded in life.
The CT showed that my hero has cancer, it said signs of colon cancer, a 4cm ovarian tumor, and Mets in the peritoneal and o mental space. So my active healthy mom who just filed for her social security a week before , now has to spend her retirement fighting for her life.
Because she had just filed, her money doesn’t even start coming in until June, and that will pay the household bills, but living in a small town has its downfalls. She has to drive to Colorado Springs for all of her appointments and treatments. That’s 1 1/2 hours and if there are multiple appointments she has to stay in the city so not only is the gas going to add up, but if she has to get a room, meals, comfortable cloths because she is retaining a lot of fluid.
She gets her port put in tomorrow, and has an appointment on Thursday, then back to salida just to be back next Thursday for chemo, which she will be doing every 3 weeks. At some point they will do surgery to try and take ALL Of the cancer out and follow that with more chemo.
She has worked and fought her entire life to make sure everyone else was ok, and now instead of enjoying her retirement, she has to fight for her life. I don’t want her to have to worry about how she is going to afford any of this, but she is. All I ask is if she has ever made any kind of impact in your life, or you have been lucky enough to feel the love she has for just about everyone she’s ever met, donate $5! If you haven’t met her, and this story somehow touches you, donate $5. If you don’t have $5, share this link with others that might. Let’s help make her retirement a bit easier by giving her one less thing to worry about as she fights for her life.
