Diane's Heart Attack Recovery

Donation protected
Hello, our names are Marina and RJ. Diane is our lovely, warm-hearted mother.

Diane had a massive heart attack Friday afternoon.

She almost didn't make it, but after three stents, five days in ICU, and a cocktail of blood thinners, lasisks, beta-blockers, and various medley of pills, she is finally stable and beginning to recover. However, this is just the beginning of a very long, very expensive recovery process.

Despite having a full time job as an insurance agent, she does not have health insurance. The small, family owned insurance company she works for does not offer insurance to its employees, nor pays enough that their employees reasonably can afford to purchase health insurance themselves. Despite decades of experience, and licensing, she barely makes more than I do as a graduate student. Given her lack of insurance, we expect this hospital bill for her 5 days in ICU, 2+ days in a regular hospital bed, 3+ days of APAP use, 2 surgeries, a slew of pills, and 3+ specialist doctors to be a small fortune. That's just the beginning.

She is expected to be released from the hospital in the next few days with a "life vest" she will need to wear for the next 3 months to protect from what the doctors have been referring to as "sudden death." This is apparently standard for patients leaving the hospital with less than 35% of their heart function. She will need to see many doctors often over the next few months - cardiologists, respiratory therapists, general doctors, etc. She will need to take several medications - blood thinners, beta-blockers - and go through weeks of cardiac therapy.

We are unsure when, or if, she will be able to work again. We are working on applying for social security disability and medicaid. This process is expected to take a long time, and something like 60% of applicants are rejected.

In the meantime, she needs financial assistance to cover the cost of medications, doctors visits, and the life vest (which is estimated to be $3K/month, $9K for the 3 months she is expected to wear it).

Those of you who know my mother know she has a huge heart. Everyone was always welcome at "Ms Diane's." No matter how little we had, she always had a PB&J, an open, non-judgemental ear, and a shoulder to cry on. She could have $20 to her name and without flinching would give a dollar to the Homeless Voice guy on the corner. And now her big heart needs our help.

The goal I set here is the estimated cost of the procedures alone. If you can find it in your heart to give anything you can it would be very, very much appreciated. She would do the same for you.
