During the COVID-19 pandemic, when we were all so concerned about staying healthy and safe, Diane Bauer fell down her stairs fracturing her temporal bone which caused a brain bleed and sustained a devastating Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).
Diane was rushed to Jacobi Hospital ICU and was there for 21 days. She was placed on a ventilator to give her brain some time to heal. They completed a tracheotomy to ween her off the ventilator and further assist her with breathing. During this time blinking her eyes and moving her legs were seen as major accomplishments.
On July 2nd, she was transferred to Helen Hayes Hospital in Haverstraw, New York for ongoing rehabilitation. On initial assessment, they are estimating she will be there for at least 6-8 weeks receiving intense physical, occupational, and speech therapy. A reassessment of her needs will be performed closer to the 8-week mark. Just this past weekend, they removed the tracheotomy tube and she is breathing on her own!
Diane has been a much-loved Kindergarten & After-school teacher at Iona Prep for over 15 years. The boys (past and present) love and cherish their time with her so much, and they are all praying for her recovery. Many of her former students have also made get well soon cards to help boost her spirit.
As most people may know, she is a private person and this is probably the last thing she would want everyone to be reading. However, she has a long journey ahead that will require a lot of patience, time and resources. We have therefore set up this GoFundMe in an effort to assist in covering her ongoing medical expenses and ensure an optimum position for a successful recovery. All donations, no matter the amount, will help provide the resources she needs. Iona is in close contact with Diane’s family, so that we can receive updates on Diane’s progress and Diane’s sister will be overseeing those gofundme to make sure all donations are used for Diane’s medical expenses.
