I’ve been living with Type 2 Diabetes for 3 years. Occasional short hospital stays are nothing new to me given the side effects of this disease. However, what I expected to be another short hospital trip on December 25, 2018, was just the opposite. This was the not the Christmas that anyone plans for as I thought I had bronchitis and needed it checked out immediately, but was instead diagnosed with Stage 4 renal failure.
In the past month I’ve gone from a normal 39-year-old who focused on work to trying to keep working while fitting in 4-hour dialysis treatments 3 times per week, transplant testing, and specialist appointments.
Long story short, while I’ve always worked hard, covered my own bills, and have not asked others for money, but the bills from this unexpected nightmare are beginning to add up. Although still trying to work as much as possible in order to maintain my health insurance coverage and income - the co-pays are adding up to over $400 per month, the current prescription regiment is averaging about $100 per month, and once the transplant happens, the prescription costs will increase. The average person ends up waiting 5-7 years for a kidney transplant. These expenses coupled with transportation costs are unfortunately not sustainable for me so I’m doing something very out of character for me and asking if you can share your spare…change or kidney!
