Diagnose Gutartig

Ich bin Martin, 32 Jahre alt, Medienschaffender, Musiker, Film- und Radiomacher aus Leipzig.
Als ich DEN einen Anruf bekam, lief bei mir eigentlich gerade alles nach Plan. Gute Jobs, spannende Projekte, funktionierende Beziehung, erste gemeinsame Wohnung, großer Freundeskreis. Doch dann: „Herr Hommel, wir haben auf den MRT-Bildern ihres Gehirns etwas gefunden, wissen aber nicht so richtig, was es ist.” Nach einem weiteren MRT bekam ich dann Klarheit: ein Epidermoid. Ein extrem seltener, noch recht kleiner, gutartiger Gehirntumor. Gutartig nahm erstmal Druck aus der Sache. Gut, harmlos, ungefährlich. Kein Problem! Doch das änderte sich bald.
Gutartig bedeutet, dass keine Metastasen vorhanden sind und man also nicht an Krebs erkrankt ist. Dennoch nimmt sich auch ein gutartig wachsender Tumor stetig mehr Platz. Mehr Platz als im Gehirn da ist. Über drei Jahre hinweg wurde das Epidermoid auf den MRT Bildern größer und die Symptome schlimmer.Da diese Tumore so selten sind (sie machen nur ca. 0,2% aller Hirntumore aus) gibt es an ihnen kein großes Forschungsinteresse. Die einzige Lösung ist: Operation. Gehirn-Operation.
Ich hatte meine OP Anfang Februar an der Uniklinik Greifswald. Man konnte mir ca. 95% des Tumors entfernen. Eine recht gute Prognose, denn man weiß, sie wachsen im Normalfall nur sehr langsam nach.
Als Filmemacher habe ich meinen Weg bis zur Operation mit Zweifeln, Ängsten und offenen Fragen in der Webserie „Diagnose Gutartig“ verarbeitet.

Ich möchte damit zum einen auf die seltene Krankheit aufmerksam machen und zum anderen Spenden für die Forschung sammeln. Die amerikanische Epidermoid Brain Tumor Society (ETBS - http://epidermoidbraintumorsociety.org) unterstützt eine Studie von Dr. Manuel Ferreira von der University of Washington, bei der herausgefunden werden soll, wie es zu diesen Tumoren kommt und wie man die Entstehung im Zweifelsfall sogar verhindern kann.

I'm Martin, 32 years old. I'm from Leipzig, Germany and work in media, film and music.
When I got THE call, everything in my life was actually going according to plan. Good jobs, exciting projects, great relationships, first apartment together, large circle of friends. But then: "Mr. Hommel, we found something on the MRI images of your brain, but we don't really know what it is." After another MRI, I got clarity: an epidermoid. An extremely rare, still quite small, benign brain tumor. Benign first took the pressure off the matter. Harmless. No problem! But that soon changed.
Benign means that there are no metastases, meaning there's no cancer. Nevertheless, even a benign growing tumor takes up more and more space. More space than there is in the brain. Over three years the epidermoid on the MRI scans got bigger and the symptoms got worse. Because these tumors are so rare (they only make up about 0.2% of all brain tumors) there is little research interest in them. The only solution is: surgery. Brain surgery.
I had my operation at the beginning of February at the Greifswald University Hospital. They were able to remove about 95% of the tumor. A pretty good prognosis, because it is known that they normally only grow back very slowly.
Being a filmmaker, I started making a YouTube series about my story. All the way through to my operation, my doubts, fears and open questions. The series is called “Diagnose Gutartig” - "A Benign Diagnosis"

I would like to draw attention to this rare disease on the one hand and collect donations for research on the other. The American Epidermoid Brain Tumor Society (ETBS - http://epidermoidbraintumorsociety.org) supports a study by Dr. Manuel Ferreira from the University of Washington, whose aim is to find out how these tumors develop and how, in case of doubt, they can even be prevented.
