A Diabetic Alert Dog for Delilah

Donation protected
Delilah is a 7 year old with Type 1 Diabetes!

She is in URGENT need of a Diabetic Alert Dog!

Type 1 Diabetes is an Auto-Immune disease that cannot be prevented, reversed or cured! Her body decided to destroy the cells in her pancreas where we naturally make Insulin. Insulin is a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. Without a working pancreas Delilah cannot produce insulin on her own so I have to give her multiple daily injections and continuously monitor her blood glucose levels. Since diagnosis Delilah has had an estimated 2,600 shots and almost double in finger pokes.

This disease is heart breaking and a 24/7 battle!

On May 5th 2015 we were visiting our local urgent care because Delilah had strep throat. I had noticed she had been wetting the bed and using the bathroom all the time.  While at the urgent care we decided to check her urine for an infection. That’s when we got this LIFE CHANGING news that our life’s would never be the same.

The doctors informed us that Delilah was spilling sugar into her urine and that we needed to be rushed to a children’s hospital in San Diego where we were admitted for 5 days. During that time we were taught the basics on how to care for diabetes and realizing that the same drug called Insulin can save her life as well as kill her if not properly administered through multiple daily injections. Delilah requires 5-10 blood glucose checks daily which is done by a finger poke. Every day with this disease is a mystery constantly worrying about her high and low blood sugars. We worry more with low blood sugars because those can take a turn for the worst very quickly. Low blood sugar also known as hypoglycemia is something we worry about every second of every day. More specifically at night. Children with Type 1 diabetes are at risk of passing away in there sleep. Delilah does not feel her lows while sleeping. That means she needs her blood sugar checked a few times at night which also means no sleep for mom. A diabetic alert dog would be able to watch over her at night and alert me to any glucose changes.

A Diabetic Alert Dog would help in so many ways. They are scent trained to detect low and high blood sugars. If we ask for the dog to detect anything below 80bg the dog would alert us. And for a high blood sugar anything over 200. It would be amazing to have an extra pair of eyes to help keep a look out on my precious angel!

Delilah also suffers from depression and anxiety at the young age of 7. She often feels different and alone and young children don’t understand what is wrong with her. A diabetic alert dog can offer unconditional love that can be very helpful to people that suffer from anxiety and depression. Studies show that animals can reduce tension and improve mood as well. Please help me give her a best friend!!

All the money raised will go straight to the Diabetic alert dog.  This includes an AKC Labrador retriever, 6-8 months of vigorous scent training as well as all equipment and veterinary care needed.

This means the world to Delilah and myself to get a Diabetic Alert Dog.  We can have some help with this relentless disease. Some comfort during the hard times and the good times!

I cannot express enough how grateful we are for every single donation! Please remember that every single dollar counts.  I know a lot of people are having a hard time so if you can only donate a dollar, we still greatly appreciate it. Thank you a million times!! God Bless!
