Diabetic Alert Dog for Courtney Kodat

This page is to help raise money for my sister Courtney’s lifesaving diabetic alert dog.
I’m Trevor Kodat, big brother to Courtney Kodat. Since I was three years old I’ve been looking out for my little sister in every way possible. From before we were playing with GI Joes and Barbies as kids through our travels abroad as adults, Courtney and I have always been a closely bonded pair. When Courtney was thirteen years old she was diagnosed with Type One or Juvenile Diabetes. This diagnosis has had a lasting impact on her life as well as that of our whole family. This meant Courtney would have to monitor her blood sugar throughout the day, count every carb that entered her body, and appropriate a precise dosage of insulin to do the job her pancreas could not.
While it is possible to live a long and healthy life manually completing the work for this organ most people don’t have reason to consider at all, it doesn’t come without its share of difficulties. One troubling event took place a few months back while my sister was celebrating the engagement of a friend. That night when everyone went to bed, Courtney did as she would have any other night. This night however her blood sugar dipped extremely low, known as hypoglycemia, and Courtney’s friends were awoken to her having a seizure that lasted for what felt like a lifetime. An ambulance was called and they were able to stop the convulsions, getting her blood sugar back up before it was too late. This was an incredibly terrifying event everyone present, and thank God there were people there. Had this event happened while Courtney was alone, the outcome would have been terribly different.
This is one of many nights family or friends were woken by Courtney’s low blood sugar making it incredibly dangerous for her to be alone. When her blood sugar is low, it puts her in a lethargic and disoriented state. Often times she is unable to hear her blood sugar monitor or unable to get up at all.
The time for a solution to this danger has come! Courtney has recently been paired with her canine companion through the ‘Diabetic Alert Dogs of America’ organization. Through this page and your generosity, we can lessen the financial burden on her for this life saving tool. These dogs are highly and specifically trained to able to detect and communicate to their companion when their blood sugar is approaching dangerous levels.
The training process for these service animals to develop the skills and certifications necessary takes a considerable amount of time and a significant amount of training. We were so close to landing Courtney this dog before the pandemic hit when the training programs came to a halt along with the rest of the world. My sister has been waiting along with many other people on a long list for this incredible service and her number has finally been pulled!
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity and consideration. If you have any questions or would like to know more about Courtney’s situation or these service animals please reference the information below.
