Diabetic Alert Dog for Amy Miner
Donation protected
Amy was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes shortly before her 8th birthday and is now 24 years old. She is also Developmentally Delayed and functions with an IQ of about 80, making it hard for her to manage her diabetes independently. She lives at home right now, but her step-father and I hope to be able to transition her to her own apartment with a live-in caregiver in the next 5 years. Having a diabetic alert dog which is trained to alert in advance of low (hypoglycemia) or high (hyperglycemia) blood sugar events before they become dangerous will be a big help in this process.
We have applied for a dog from Diabetic Alert Dogs of America in Las Vegas, Nevada. The cost of a dog is $15,000, which is comparable to the other organizations who train this type of dog. A deposit of $2,500 must accompany our request of breed, sex and color of dog we prefer. Then $5,000 must be paid before they will ship the dog and trainer to our home approximately 6 months from the time we order the dog. The balance of $7,500 can be paid off interest free over a period of two years. We have the funds for the deposit, but need help raising the rest of the money needed to pay for the dog.
This dog will enable Amy to become more independent and be able to keep her blood sugar in a better range so she will be healthier as well.
Our family will be forever grateful for any help we receive and will do our best to help others in need.
