Berty's Diabetes Research Project

Donation protected
My best friend Berty is starting her second year of grad school this fall. She's working toward earning her PhD in Medical Sociology at University of California, San Francisco.

Like many of us in Latinx families, Berty has first-hand experience witnessing the painful, deteriorating effects of Diabetes on her loved ones. Her experience is driving her passion to study and change the way marginalized groups living with Diabetes are treated in the medical system specifically in the San Joaquin Central Valley.

This year, she's going to launch her research project and she needs funding to help compensate her research participants and have an editor help her prepare a high quality research paper.  Berty's research has already been approved by the Institutional Review Board at UCSF; she's recruiting research participants now.

Please donate $10, $20, $50, $100, $200 or even $1,000! No gift is too small.

Research interviews start in October.  Let's try to raise at least $2,000 by Halloween!

You can read her bio here

Research Project Budget: $3,500

$2,000 ($200 each for 10 research participants)

$1,000 (writing tutor and editor)

$   500 (for interview transcription services; $50 per hour of interview audio)

Research Background:
Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. Over 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes. It is the primary cause of death for 79,535 Americans each year, and it costs the U.S. $327 billion per year. Fortunately, this disease can be managed with self-care practices, but not everyone has the resources to manage their diabetes. When adults with diabetes do not practice the self-care that is needed to manage their disease, it can lead to long term complications such as; eye blindness, kidney and liver failure, limb amputations, nerve damage, and heart disease. Studies show that there are racial disparities in health broadly, but most relevant for this study, there are racial disparities in health among those living with diabetes. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of research on whether parenthood affects the practice of self-care. So, there is more to learn about the bi-directional relationships between Latinx mothers and children in this setting.

Research Project Description:
This research pilot will focus on Latinx mothers between the ages of 35-65 in the San Joaquin Central Valley living with diabetes and whether parenthood affects their practice of self-care. The study will explain their trajectory of their chronic disease, investigate their experience as a parent with a chronic disease, and ascertain whether and how they practice self-care. She will be using a phenomenological methodology for this pilot study, primarily relying on in-depth interviews with Latinx mothers who have diabetes. This approach will enable her to understand how these individuals are experiencing this phenomenon and how it has affected their lives and health.
