Dezzy's emergency vet care

Donation protected
Dezzy is a beloved outdoor squirrel that desperately needs our intervention to continue to have a wonderful life.

We're not sure how this all started, but on February 1st it became clear that Dezzy had developed a very large lump on the right side of his neck. Lumps like this sometimes open on their own and drain, sometimes they need to be lanced and cleaned with the help of human intervention, and unfortunately sometimes they're Zymbals Gland tumors. At this point, we're treating Dezzy under the assumption that this will be one of the first two scenarios.

Today, February 6th, Dezzy was successfully trapped and brought inside to be cared for by Jamie (Dezzy's human friend). Jamie has infant ibuprofen, Clavamox as the antibiotic to fight abscesses, and Clindamycin for added help.

However, it quickly became apparent once Jamie got a closer look at Dezzy that his issues extend much further than just that gruesome lump on his neck. His teeth are in desperate need of veterinary care, as they are too long, not correctly aligned, and one incisor appears missing. Seems like a case of malocclusion, but we'll let the vet decide for himself as we're not experts. The tissues in Dezzy's mouth are mangled from the teeth issues, and simply trimming his teeth will not resolve the damage that has been done.

At this time, the current plan is to take Dezzy on Monday to a local Chicago area vet that Jamie has dealt with before. Dezzy will need to be put under in order to examine him, he'll need more appropriate medicine, and we expect the vet will lance the abscess and begin the process of flushing it out. We anticipate this bill to be in the $400-500 range, so we're currently trying to raise that amount. If it's less, we'll absolutely refund the money. We also anticipate that the vet will recommend surgery for Dezzy's dental issues, but until that is confirmed we will try to raise the initial costs.

There's a chance Dezzy may need human care for the rest of his life, depending on if the vet can re-align his teeth to avoid the malocclusion. I know Jamie is not prepared for that responsibility financially, but let's wait and see the vet's diagnosis first before we try to deal with that.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I'll continue to update this with pictures, videos, and any other news that comes to light. Keep Dezzy and Jamie in your thoughts, the fight for Dezzy's life has only just begun now that he's able to be cared for inside.
