My name is Devyn Miranda and roller derby has been an enormous part of my life and made me who I am today. My derby name is Devilyn and my number is 40. I started roller derby when I was six years old and have spent the last 11 years working really hard to advance my skills. It has given me a sense of belonging, lasting friendships, athleticism, discipline, and shown me how essential teamwork and community are.
In June 2022, I made it to my first championship tournament in Phoenix, AZ. My team took home bronze. While there, I tried out for the Junior Roller Derby Association (JRDA) Team USA and after several months of waiting to hear anything, I found out that I MADE IT!
The journey hasn’t always been easy. To improve my skills and stay competitive, I have had to move teams a few times. I have loved and learned from each team I have been on. Unfortunately, the more competitive the team, the farther away I must travel for practice. My parents have been extremely supportive of my passion, and my dad has been so great, giving up a large part of his weekends to drive me up to four hours a day just for practice. Roller derby is a year-round sport, and the equipment is not cheap. As you can imagine, there are not a lot of roller derby teams close by to compete with, which means a lot of traveling around the country. And now, overseas.
This is my senior year of high school and a great way to end one chapter of my life and start another. Any contributions you can make to help my dream come true is very much appreciated. The money will go to my travel costs and replace gear that is worn out.
Thank you in advance for your help.
