We are the Fowlks Family and we are raising money for our son Devin P. He was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Anemia disease two weeks after he was born.
Our journey to become parents began years ago. After I underwent many surgeries and a miscarriage that resulted in the loss of one of my fallopian tubes, my husband and I thought we would never be able to have children.
Much to our surprise, God blessed us with two wonderful boys. Our first son, Drew, was born in September of 2012. Then just fourteen months later, we welcomed Devin P.
My husband and I knew that when the boys were born, each would have a 1 in 4 chance of having Sickle Cell Anemia disease because both my husband and I carry the Sickle Cell Trait. We were hopeful that Devin wouldn't be affected, since his older brother wasn't. This, unfortunately, was not the case.
Since Devin was an infant, he has been rushed to the ER numerous times, and actually admitted three times with extended stays because his blood levels have been low and his spleen has been enlarged. In addition, Devin has undergone two blood transfusions; one in December 2014 and another one most recently in April 2015.
While both my husband and I are employed full-time; he’s a barber and I’m an elementary school teacher, we continue to have mounting out-of-pocket medical expenses (more than $10,000 to date), ongoing prescription costs and, of course, lost wages due to missed work.
After making it through all of this, we are now facing another mountain. Devin will be undergoing surgery on Tuesday, May 5th to remove his spleen. This surgery will not cure him of the Sickle Cell Anemia disease, but it will definitely help in managing it day to day. However, Devin will still be susceptible to ER visits, as having no spleen decreases his abilities to ward off infections.
Our journey has clearly been challenging, and we accept that its hardly over. But with God leading the way, we are claiming victory over Devin P.'s health. We ask for your support- spiritually and financially. Any contribution would be most appreciated, and will be applied to either past or existing medical expenses. Thank you for your time and consideration.
God Bless You,
Derrick and Dushanca Fowlks
