This is to raise money for Devin Kroll to cover the out-of-pocket cost for the surgery he had on Monday, May 18th, to correct his Achalasia.
Devin is an amazing single father of 3 boys, loves to play disc golf (his boys, too!) and enjoys cooking awesome food! He has a passion for wine and a knack for selling it along with meals at Nepenthe in Big Sur, however, due to Shelter In Place, he's been out of work for a while and unemployment income (as many of you may be experiencing, as well) is not comparable to normal income.
Devin's need for the surgery was urgent, so we're very grateful that he was able to qualify to get it done during Shelter In Place.
Devin appreciates any help you may be able to extend to his medical bills; wether it's $1, $10 or $100, any help IS a huge help and very much appreciated!
Here's Devin's story (from shortly prior to his surgery):
A couple weeks ago I was diagnosed with achalasia, many of you might not be aware of this because I did not want to make it a big deal for my own personal reasons and before I knew what was wrong with me I thought I might just be able to tough it out, which inevitably made my condition worse, it is something that is rare and is random, something that science can't explain why it happens I first started having symptoms last summer, last October the symptoms progressed to where at least once a day, while eating or drinking, I would gag it back out, not throw up because the food or beverage would not make it to my stomach, it would get caught in the bottom of my esophagus and I would gag it back out. About two months ago it progressed again to where it would happen for hours on end every day, I would not be able to eat or drink anything, anything, for sometimes up to 12 hours, so you can only imagine how hungry and thirsty I would get. Achalasia is a medical condition that only happens to about 3,000 people in America annually. The cause is unknown, for some reason nerves at the bottom of the back of your head go away and those nerves control your esophagus and how it functions as far as allowing you to swallow so when these nerves go away the lower part of my esophagus that is connected to my stomach will not open, sometimes for hours and hours, so to fix this I will have surgery on my esophagus where they are going to cut the muscle fibers around the part that connects to my stomach so my esophagus will remain permanently open so I will no longer be able to swallow although it might feel like I'm swallowing, all that's happening is the effect of gravity is making food and beverage fall into my stomach so the downside is that I just can't lie down for an hour or so after I have a meal because it could spill back out my mouth, and I cannot travel in outer space because the lack of gravity, the past two months have been some of the hardest I've ever dealt with my entire life I've lost about 20 lb, have become malnourished and I'm hungry and thirsty pretty much every moment of every day but thankfully my insurance came through and I have a surgery date scheduled from Monday May 18th. So to anyone who cares about my well-being please do me a favor and put healing Vibes out to the universe for me and let's all hope I have a speedy recovery which should be about 2 weeks after the surgery. I want to give a huge shout out to Kassie Jo Harp who has helped me and supported me through this dire time using her experience from her job to help me with all of my appointments and find the right surgeon and help me with my kids when I do not have the energy to do so, without a doubt I would be in a much worse condition if it were not for her, words do not do justice to show my appreciation for her, Kassie has essentially been my Saving Grace, I love and appreciate all you as well, thank you.
