Dev's Recovery from Stroke

Donation protected
On November 11, 2016 at 6pm, my dad, Dev, suffered a major stroke which resulted in permanent damage to half of his left brain. Thankfully, he survived. However, he now has complete speech loss, inability to read/write, paralysis of his right arm, severe weakness in his right leg, core weakness and impairments to cognition and language comprehension. This fund is created to help both my parents (Lily & Dev) with this new reality.

It was at about 6pm on Nov 11 that my Dad was on the phone with his eldest son, Vishal. In the middle of the call, my brother heard my mom screaming because my dad suddenly fell. A few minutes passed by and my mom was able to help my dad up and he regained full function. He went on to eat dinner and got ready for bed.

At 7:30, I came over the house to check on dad. It was clear that my dad needed to go to the hospital. As we got ready to go to the hospital, my dad lost complete function on the right side of his body, lost his speech and became semi-conscious. We rushed to the hospital. The next 36 hours would be one of the biggest roller coasters of our lives. There were times where it looked like he was fully recovered, and there were times where it looked like he would not survive. The doctors could not do much at this point and it was up to dad to fight through these attacks. We soon learned that the stroke was caused by a completely blocked left neck artery and it resulted in permanent damage to half of his left brain.

Since the events of November 11 & 12, my dad has been in active rehab at the Hospital - Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy and Speech therapy. He has shown great courage and strength (must be the Gurkha in him) and has made great strides in the last three months.

We are now preparing to bring him home. However, the severity of his stroke has resulted in major impairments. He now requires 24/7 care and specialized equipment to help with everyday activites. These include a custom wheelchair, hospital bed, Lift transfers, washing & bathroom equipment. Their home also needs to be renovated to accomodate his care - the home requires stair lifts, wheelchair ramps and bathroom modifications. While at home, we plan to continue his therapy as well.

None of these costs will be covered by government programs.

As his primary caregiver, My mom will also require extra help. We will be arranging care aids to come by the house, new safety equipment for home and other services to help my mom manage her home.

My parents are low-income seniors. These events have put an extreme emotional strain on both my parents - this campaign was created so we can help alleviate any financial strain.  Any money raised through this campaign will directly help my mom and dad with his medical cost and care needs.

My dad has been the pillar of our family, and I know he has positively affected many lives. You may know him as a friend, family, our dad, previous colleague, senior in the Nepalese community or a badminton player. Through his personality, he has become a favourite patient among nurses and therapists. This should come as no surprise to anyone that knows him - he has always been a joy to be around. His personality continues to shine through his disabilities. My mom and dad have always opened their hearts and home to everyone. They're always quick to lend a hand to those in need .

Any financial support to help my parents tackle this new reality will go a long way. Please share this page with anyone else that may be interested in supporting my dad & mom.

Thank you in advance for your support & well wishes.
