Devan’s Comeback
Toward the beginning of November, my younger brother Devan experienced what we thought was a typical flu. Instead of recovering from the illness, his immune system attacked his nervous system and his legs suddenly became paralyzed. After several tests, they discovered he had developed a rare neurological disorder called Guillain-Barré syndrome, which could keep him paralyzed for several months to a few years.
He’s expected to walk again, but will have to undergo several treatments and months of physical rehabilitation with multiple specialists to strengthen and retrain his legs. No one is allowed to visit him due to Covid-19 restrictions, so he’s having to navigate all of this on his own, in addition to spending Thanksgiving and Christmas alone in the hospital. We’re not sure when he will be released, as the date keeps getting extended, but when he does, he will be in a wheelchair until he makes a full recovery.
The hospital bills and costs associated with making a wheelchair accessible environment for him have become more extensive than our family expected, so we’re turning to our community for help.
We’re confident Devan will make a full recovery, but he has a long, strenuous road ahead of him. This has been a very scary and stressful time, but we’re so thankful for the kind words and encouragement we’ve received already. We truly believe positivity and prayer will make a huge impact on his recovery, and we genuinely appreciate any and all support.
