#DeublerStrong is looking for a way to help Dan and Kathy Deubler on their long road to recovery. On a Saturday afternoon, Dan and Kathy were hit head on by an uninsured drunk driver who had 3 previous DUIs. They were both seriously injured. Dan sustained a broken femur in 3 places, a torn bicep, and multiple abrasions. Kathy also sustained a broken femur, a broken wrist, and severe bleeding in her abdomen. Both were MediVac helicoptered to a hospital in Palm Springs, CA. The helicopter ride is not covered by insurance. Both underwent immediate surgery to repair the femur in Dan's case, and to stop the bleeding in Kathy's case. Kathy was kept in the ICU, and underwent 3 more surgeries: femur repair, wrist repair, and a tracheostomy. It has taken more than 3 weeks for Kathy to be moved from the ICU.
It was just last summer that Dan Deubler, 83, raced at Sturgis Flat Track. He may not be quite ready this year, but hopes to do it again next year. He is currently going through physical rehab while Kathy is still hospitalized almost four weeks later. He is able to visits her daily with the help of daughter Connie. Both Pennie and Eddie have been to help and hope to return soon.
The Deubler family has been part of the flat rack world since the 1950s. In addition to Dan’s racing history, all of his children (Eddie, Connie, Pennie and Joe) were flat track racers too. Dan and Kathy’s grandson, Scottie (Hollywood) Deubler (former national #43) is now the announcer for the AMA Grand National races. The Deubler family is a household name in the flat track community.
For now, and the immediate future, Dan and Kathy must remain in Palm Springs, California. They hope Kathy will progress well and they will be able to close up house in Phoenix and return to Yukon, Oklahoma where they will be close to family and friends.
