Caleb’s birthday coincidentally fell on our last visit. Caleb is 14 years old. 14years of Caleb's life has been spent in prison because he was born by a mother in incarceration. So he lives in prision with his mother. His mother still has 15 more years to serve and that means by the time she has served out her time, Caleb would be almost 30years old! What is Caleb’s crime? Born by an incarcerated mother. what type of life awaits Caleb?.
Nkoyo is 9months old, sick and malnourished without access to food and medication for her continuously deteriorating condition. Thank God there was a medical doctor on our team during our last visit who was able to attend to the needs of Nkoyo. What is Nkoyo’s crime? Nkoyo is a baby born by an incarcerated mother.Nkoyo's mum still has 10 more years left to serve out her time. This means all Nkoyo’s early childhood will be spent in prision, no school,healthcare,no toys,no diapers,clothes,food....
There are many more children in conditions like this in Nigerian prisons.
We bring to you the plight of babies, toddlers, pre-teens in prison in Nigeria, whose only crime was being born by incarcerated mothers (Detained by Birth). When a pregnant or a nursing mother or even women with children are convicted, these children go to prison and serve the term with the convicted mothers. What type of future awaits a child who was born and raised up in prison by an incarcerated mother ? The only crime of these children is being born.Thus they are Detained by birth .
“Detained by Birth” is an initiative of Nonnie Roberson Ministries. We visit prisons, provide clothing, toys, food, baby supplies and Healthcare to include medications for these children. It is a sad story, as these kids don’t even have the basic amenities or luxury of diapers instead they use cartons and newspapers as diapers.
The purpose of this campaign is to solicit your help and support which will enable us expand our reach by visiting, providing for and taking care of more children Detained by Birth in various prisons all over Nigeria.
These children who are detained by birth, whose only crime is being born, will benefit from us. We intend to provide education, toys, books, clothing, food, diapers, toiletries, health care, and active lobby to get them out of the prisons. Prisons are not a place where children should be raised. We need your assistance urgently as the situation and living condition of these children deteriorates daily.
