#DestinedForSpain : Waiting in the Wings

Born prematurely, my life has been a battle since birth.

Being born at 29 weeks caused me to have some learning difficulties; such as issues with reading, motor skills, math and other learning differences, but it never deterred me from excelling in every venture I’ve placed my heart in.

Growing up, my mother was my greatest support and motivation. Watching her not only overcome — but thrive — when life presents challenges, helped me understand life from a deeper perspective. My mother’s courage inspired me to embrace the challenge of being the first person in my family to study abroad in Spain this summer. Furthermore, I hope to one day leave a lasting impact in Springfield, and inspire other students from underserved communities to take the chance to explore another country.

Most importantly, I want to inspire my little brother. I want to set a positive example of what a leader should look like. Studying abroad will show my little brother that it’s possible to do anything you put your mind to - you only have to put the work in. No matter how difficult life gets, I am motivated to keep pushing forward, to inspire him.

Traveling to Alicante, Spain is a wonderful opportunity. I am looking forward to diving into the unique culture of Alicante, Spain and sharing my Dominican/Puerto Rican culture as well.

Growing up in a Dominican/Puerto Rican household, I’ve had a desire to improve my Spanish to better communicate with extended family. Improving my Spanish will encourage me to step out of my comfort zone because I used to be embarrassed that I was unable to speak Spanish as well as other family members. Traveling to Spain will not only improve my Spanish, it will encourage me to step outside of my comfort zone, embrace my fear of speaking Spanish, and set an example for my younger brother.

I am very excited to step into this journey.
