We are Disability Advocates in Action, a student-powered group on UGA's campus with a passion for disability rights, equality, and awareness in our community.
UGA's Destination Dawgs program will start in January of 2017. Destination Dawgs provides a post-secondary education to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Research shows that obtaining a college education improves outcomes for individuals with intellectual disabilities. This program addresses a huge gap in services and will help the students to obtain meaningful employment post-graduation.
Meet Destination Dawgs' Inaugral Class!
What you probably don't know is that, as of right now, there is no financial aid available to the 5 students who have been accepted into this program. Traditionally, UGA students who apply to the University have a plethora of scholarships available to them and are eligible to apply for federal student aid. The Destination Dawgs students will be attending classes, commuting, participating on campus, and paying for tuition just like all other UGA students. Not having any financial aid available is simply unjust. Before financial aid opportunities are secured for Destination Dawgs students in the future, we want want to address this gap.
We hope to raise money to create a scholarship fund available to Destination Dawgs students and their families. Once the money is raised, we will reward the scholarship to one or more students in need, depending on how much we raise. If we complete our new goal of $7,500, then we will be able to give each Destination Dawg $1,500, which will cover fees for the spring semester.
We hope that you will aid us in giving the Destination Dawgs students equal access to some of the opportunities that individuals without disabilities have during and after college. The right to an affordable, inclusive post-secondary education opens the door to countless meaningful opportunities in the future.
